MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New petrol tank
Just bought a new tank for my 1500. The finish on the exterior looks like a transparent lacquer - fine for shipping - but I need to paint and protect it, but with what? |

I’d recommend a couple of coats of zinc based primer followed by a couple of coats of stone chip paint. Up to you if you then want to wax oil it once fitted. Best way to fit it that I found was using a car jack to slowly lift it into place. Avoids accidentally dropping it and damaging the fresh paint. |

Definitely a good idea to Waxoyl the top of the tank, as well as the underside of the boot floor. |

x2 for slapping as much protection as you can on the topside of the tank and the boot floor above it. That's where the corrosion usually happens as moisture gets trapped there. |

I used Hammerite Red Oxide and Black Hammerite on the top of that. |

While you have access to the underside of the boot floor I would strongly suggest this is also checked and probably will also found to be in need of being cleaned and prepped for similar protection treatment.
also if not already carried out to provide an access hole in the boot floor to permit ready access to the fuel tank sender unit. Take dimensions from the tank mounting holes for location of required hole and use floor studs to mark corresponding location hole. Cover plate can be either formed from sheet metal or grp using a release film on the boot floor for in situ moulding. |

Odd that BMC didn't put in an inpection hole to access the fuel sender. I agree, a useful modification. |
