MG Midget and Sprite Technical - (next problem!) Bottom rad hose and engine mount
Next problem... :-) Has anyone ever encountered this before? 1500 engine, my bottom rad hose rubs up against the engine mount (red circled). During the short time that I have had the engine running (before spotting this) it appears to have caused the rad-hose joint to work a little loose and start weeping onto the steering rack and down (blue circled puddle). Going to try draining things and put the hose on the other way round. It looked symmetrical but maybe not... Cheers, Malc. ![]() |

Might try a zip tie to hold the 2 togather and prevent rubbing Prop |

I will pass thanks Onno, this strikes me as an easier problem to deal with than sorting out the breathing on an A-series ;-) |

My bottom hose is right up against the mount too (matron!)but no problem from it so far. Thanks for the warning. when the cars back on the road I'll keep an eye on it. |

You can get s/s braided sleeving to put a hose through which while far from the perfect solution will give you a bit of time while you work out what needs to be changed. |

plastic spiral wrap from any hydraulic hose stockist or cable supplier. Just wind it round. Available in many sizes and great for preventing hose/cable chafing. |
RS Hughes |
I put some 2mm rubber sheet between the mount and the hose and cable tied it to the hose. Stops the abrading of the hose.Cheers |

OK, so if it happens on others, maybe it is supposed to be like that, quality British engineering and all that! Depending on how lazy or otherwise I feel I might try removing it and putting it on the other way, or maybe just tighten it up a bit to stop the leak and be done with it. It just doesn't seem right that they should be touching. Engine and therefore hose will be vibrating, mount is rigid. A recipe for chaff-age for sure! Malcolm. |

Has the hose been pushed fully onto the water pump and radiator spigots? Alternatively, could one [or both] 'arms' of the hose be shortened to create a gap between the hose and the mount. No experience of the 1500 but just an idea. |

My 1275 Frog has this problem. I put a jubilee clip on the hose just where it rubs on the engine mount. Works a treat. Rob |

Assuming it is the correct hose, and putting it on the other way around didn't help, maybe try loosening the clamps and slightly rotating the hose on the outlet(s) one way or the other. This might cause the center of the hose to move up just enough to clear the mount. |

Good Evening Everybody, I had exactly this problem , had an A series radiator fitted into the 1500 engine bay. The radiator was knackered anyway so fitted a new 1500 rad , problem solved , and yes the hose was chaffed/damaged very quickly. Best regards , Chris Buckenham |

I think I'll find a section of old hose, slit it lengthways and put it over as a cover and secure with tie-wraps. |

nick dodges left, now forces right of center, he hurdle jumps ...LINEs up, he shOOTS...SCORE !!!! Gold star for nick Prop |

Just to conclude this, I took the hose off, tried to rotate it and tried it on the other way but still the same problem. Slight design flaw and/or slightly off spec new hoses? Anyway, I have done what Rob did and put on a hose clamp half way up the hose to protect it where it touched the mount. Pic shows where the mount was digging into the hose. Cheers all, Malcolm. ![]() |

New(ish) engine mounts? The 1500 type ones made these days for the usual suspects sag terribly, resulting in the engine sitting too low/at the wrong angle. Then things like this happen. |

Malc I seriously dont think id want to play strip to nude poker with you....haha Your a brave man, or desperate with cash, id replace the hose...im sure if it where me on a hot day, at 80mph, for 3 hours, that notch would just blow out For the size of damage I dont think a hose clamp with help much over the long term I still like nicks thinking for this But just for piece of mind, id replace the hose or cut out the bad spot and use some kind of splice tube with a couple of hose clamps Prop |

looks like it is a common problem got my engine out at moment but marks on hose

it should not be a problem when i refit it with new hoses samco are 9mm thinner at that point

Mark Just the electric color alone will repell any damage NICE Prop |

Looking at the photos of the hoses that are chaffing against the engine mount, I would say that they are poorly formed. To clear the engine mount, the OE hose has a distinct upwards 'U' bend so that it clears the mount. |

So junk new parts it is then! Wonder if my old hose is still about or if I chucked it (just to compare). Thanks Andy. |

Men , Are you sure that you have the correct radiator fitted ? If you have an A series radiator fitted in a 1500 setup you will get that interference on the lower hose with the engine mount. |
