MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Oil pressure relief valve access?

Is starter removal the only way to get the relief valve out?
When I made the starter cover for my Datsun tranny I wasn't thinking about removing the starter.

Pull the distributor for ease of access, and use an open ended.

With the rivergate back plate, it's really easy to remove the starter motor as the bolts are screwed directly into the back plate with no nut to worry about. However, as Lawrence says, the dizzy can be removed for better access.
As an aside, how did you make the starter cover. I run mine without a cover and the starter bendix exposed (which isn't the ideal scenario).

When I did this job last month, I removed the oil pressure gauge pipe and then cut down an old socket to fit over the Relief Valve in the gap between the starter motor bolt and the valve itself. I then simply used a ratchet to remove the valve assembly.

Before I refitted the new valve, I had a 1/2" nut welded to the bolt head to allow a smaller socket to be used with out any problem.

You might like to try this, whether you follow my way or the distributor removal way?

Glynn. That's a useful mod'. I think I'll do that myself. Cheers.

Hey

Phil,

Why are you needing to pull the pressure relief valve...if you dont need to, dont... not only hard to remove but harder to put back in because of the spring pressure and trying to twist the cap back into place... its like trying to screw a sprayer nozzle on the end of a garden hose with water exiting at full max

I used a socket on the end of my electric impact gun wrench... reeer, rrreeeerrrrr. But the engine was out, so easy peissy.

If your installing an adjustable... please contact me before... theres a problem with some of the kits, I dont know if its been resolved yet.

Good to see you agian old friend
