MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Part identification please
Can anyone identify this pair of items. They were in one of my MK 1 Sprite boxes of bits. Though they may be nothing to do with it!

They don't look familiar. How big are they? |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
Sorry, vital info missing! 10.25" overall length. Bit different I suppose if they were 4 foot! |
GuyW |
They are the brackets from a works type hardtop. They fit over the mounting for the hood. Was helping to fabricate two of these earlier this month!! Bob |
Bob Beaumont |
Thanks Bob. Pity that's all I have. No hardtop to go with them. :-( |
GuyW |
they often go missing (hence why we were fabricating some!) so possibly a useful ebay item! |
Bob Beaumont |
GuyW - could I relieve you of these hardtop brackets if you have no use for them? 'Best price paid' or somesuch (no real idea what they're worth but we can talk about it ;-) ) You can email me at firstname Dotty secondname atte Talk21 Dotty compadre (snipping the Dorothies and removing the chaplain) Many thanks Tom |
Tom Coulthard |
Yes Tom, you are welcome to them. Just emailed. Guy |

Piggy backing onto my own "parts identification" thread with a new one now. Another item that came in the box of "Sprite bits". But were these windscreen washer bottles ever fitted to a Sprite? The only time I saw anything like this big square glass bottle thing it was on an old Landie. ![]() |

Looks like a Lucas Electric Screenjet which was fitted to Jaguar E Types and probably other premium cars of the period such as Rover |
Doug Plumb |
My brothers Daimler Dart has one of those. I would assume that at one time they were the standard Lucas part for electric washers but dont think electric washers were ever standard on Spridgets. Trev |

Guy The washer bottle is a round Tudor one that fits in a bracket on the N/S front using the upper radiator / inner wing bracket. Can't say I have seen a Lucas one, certainly not electric! |
Bob Beaumont |
Yes, I know the little tudor one, but wondered if this Lucas glass sort was ever an option on a Sprite. I am not sure there is enough space to fit it though!
I do have a push plunger type washer pump for the Sprite dashboard, though I am missing the male threaded screw-in bezel that secures it in place. I had considered gutting this and fitting a contact toggle switch inside so that a push on the plunger would switch on a standard little electric washer pump. Of course the easy option is just to buy and fit a new plunger pump. They aren't expensive. |
GuyW |
As I understand the washer was an option anyway either the Tudor type or the rarer Trafalgar. The Trafalgar had a much wider neck and had a dual spray rather than the two single ones. I had bits of a Trafalgar one but the bottle was split so I reverted to the Tudor type. |
Bob Beaumont |
“Of course the easy option is just to buy and fit a new plunger pump. They aren't expensive.” But are they any good? I recently stripped a dashboard, which had a broken washer pump. I may have saved the bezel. |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
if Dave hasn't, I've numerous push pumps taking up space... Also recommend you research the value of that original glass bottle unit - you may be pleasantly surprised, they're over £200 new! https://tinyurl.com/y9flyb8s |

Thanks David. I habe also spotted the repro ones on eBay. I need to clean and test this one first. I don't think I want it in the Sprite anyway. |
GuyW |
Guy Is this what you need? It was actually where I expected to find it, which is unusual. ![]() |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
Yes, that's it Dave. Thanks Best add it to the list! |
