MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Plating over the wing indicator hole on 1500

Can anyone give advice on the best way to do the plating over of the front wings of a 1500 to install an indicator when the bumper has been removed?

K Hughes

I have done this on my 1500, and then fitted beehive style indicators. I cut out a plate and bent it to the right shape and welded it in flush. Just made sure your patch doesn’t sit proud of the original wing. It doesn’t matter if it sits slightly recessed as you can correct with filler.

Once you took the rubber bumpers off did you have to do anything to adjust the ride height?

It’s next but one on my list once I finish patching the rotten rear end and fitting the replacement seats (which were why I discovered the rotten rear ended !)

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. That is the way I thought it could be done.
Chris.
Did you fit the amber lens with clear lamps, or clear lens with orange lamps?
K Hughes

Yep I had to repair a rotten rear end too, I replaced 6 inches of boot floor and used a new 1275 rear panel. I also added filler pieces under the lights.

I put in new 1275 springs front and rear and added 1/2 inch spacers at the front to get the car level and at a height that looks ‘right’.
Low enough to be practical on the road.

Chris.

Where did you get the rear filler sections from?
I have been advised to replace the rear panel and the rear sections of the rear wings from an early version which have the filler sections built in.
Do you have a photo of the front of the car?
K Hughes

The filler pieces came with the car when I purchased it off the PO. Sorry no idea where to source them.

The front nearside wing is very tatty and needs replacing as most of the front lower section is badly repaired with fibreglass

The front wings were tack welded to the sills because when the lower sections of the wings were repaired by a previous owner they didn’t bother replacing the rotten fixings.

I repaired the lower fixings and the wings are now bolted to the car. But as I say i’m Not happy with the nearside wing so I will replace it before prep for paint. But before all that I need to repair two badly repaired a posts but that’s another story!

The only pic of the front of the car is too big but once I get back home from holiday I can post another pic

Cheers
Chris
