MG Midget and Sprite Technical - points sticking

Chaps: '66 1275 as-she-left-the-factory: What can cause points to stick together? Arcing due to a dodgy on-the-way-out condenser??
Thanks. Dave.

coil connected wrong way round? '67 should be positive earth.

David C. Incorrect points gap (error in setting or wear on the rubbing block in contact with the points cam)is the most common cause. Second most common (perhaps the first with today's condensers) is a bad condenser which should stop the flow of current, preventing arcing, when the points open. I have never known of a coil, wired up incorrectly, to cause a points problem. But, I have never wired one up correctly and only have tales from friends, who did, to go by on this.

David: Been running absolutely fine, and once I had sprung them apart and re-gapped went fine afterwards, Yep: Positive earth...

this was diagnosed on my first sprint car by a local mobile tuner many years ago; apparently it moves particles of material excessively causing a large pit and a corresponding hump. The hot particles can cause the contacts to fuse together when stopped. Allegedly. I'm no auto electrician.

David,

If its any use I can let you have a NOS Lucas condenser and quickfit set of points - DCB101(C1)and DSB101 CS1) which I think is correct for your car.

Having a clear out.

Post an e mail and I will pop them in the post.

You know there are people who will tell you that condensers never fail (except this new lot of recently made in a *thridwordl country, condensers) don't you?

For thirty years this was one of my "indicators" of condenser failure as the points arc due to loss of UMF** etcetera, at the roadside on breakdown duty...

welding points together is usually condenser fail
