MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Pre heat on inlet manifold

I have bypassed the heater tube that goes through the inlet manifold temporarily as the end is too damaged to get a hose on and I need the car to work in the next week or so before I can get this sorted. I know this will work ish because it works when cold on start up and before heat is in the engine cooling system. I will be wiring the copper by pass to the inlet manifold so some heat will transfer (a bit). However I also know this hot water circuit is independent of the heater so always pre heats at hottest water temp possible the inlet once the engine is warm. Just wondered if anyone else has done it and if any icing of fuel going into the engine happens and therefore affects engine running? Any advice or thoughts on this welcome.

Also if anyone has adapted an inlet manifold to put another piece of pipe in to replace this duff end, (the end nearest the radiator), and it works, I could do with knowing what was done, (I have two manifolds and probably enough kit to make some bits).

Again thoughts etc. welcome.

Dave,
As far as I am aware, it is nothing more than a fuel economy arrangement on the 1500. Not critical to the normal running at all. Certainly no problem to disconnect it to keep you on the road.

I think the intent of the coolant passage through the intake manifold is to prevent fuel condensing out of the mixture and pooling in the manifold. You should certainly be able to bypass it with little or no ill-effects; it's going to warm up anyway once the head gets hot. At least as a temporary measure, this shouldn't hurt anything.

Other manifolds don't have them (I am thinking other cars as well as weber manifolds for the triumph engine) so wouldn't much worry about it! :-D

Thanks all thats great. The by pass is a piece of old 15mm copper heating pipe and will be wired to the inlet manifold anyway. Certainly puts the old brain at rest.

Heater removed and crud cleared out today. Heater in bits but reassemble-able. (I hate rusty fixing screws). Should be able to reassemble water based systems tonight / tomorrow morning and then with new petrol pump should be flying and warm late tomorrow / weds. :-).

don't forget a bit of copperease on your new screws - just in case

with the copper if you can very slightly flare the ends if rubber hoses are going on to them just to give the jubilee clips more to grip against, if you're careful just hitting one end of the pipe with the other end against some thing flat and hard and then just turning to do the other end, if you've got a ball-pien it might help

don't forget the important seals

Thanks for the remind Nigel, its done.

if all done as per you should be noticing, if only slight, increase in cabin heat (if you're using the heater controls correctly, many seem not to)

of course now the weather will warm up and you'll have to wait until next winter :)

It is a lot warmer today. Too hot for my usual multiple layers in the workshop. Oh well. Story of our lives eh? Just the bonnet to go then awaiting the petrol pump before running and seeing if all well.

well time to oil hinges, cables, locks, etc.

grease seat runners to upset the other half

do the driver's checks - brakes (fluid res), battery, tyres, etc.

clean/repair tools, restock the consumables, mug of tea and biccies
