MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear axle Bump Stops

Just refurbished my rear axle new everything. Mg is a 1500 and axle has the conical shaped area to put the bump stops on. How the bloody hell do they do it? I have tried lubrication to no avail. Would a press be able to do the job?

Probably another case of new parts using different materials spec from the originals. I'd re-use the old ones if you still have them.
David Smith

I have tried to put the originals back on as I was beginning to wonder that myself but no luck with them either!
C Carter

I cut a slight taper in the hole, lubed them and muscled them on.

A clamp is useful ... or a vice if the axle is out of the car - then it's really easy.
Paul Walbran

i had the same trouble a month or so ago, i soaked the new bump stops in boiling water for about 3 minutes to expand them, then was just about able to force them onto the axle mountings, get one side on first then work it round like fitting a tyre to a bike.
i was suprised by how hard it was...of course it helps if the axle is on the floor and you can get your weight above the bump stops to push them on...
Andy Phillips

plenty of lube - ideally red rubber grease - and push in from above with a clockwise screwing action (anticlockwise if lefthanded)
David Smith

Axle is out of the car but my vice which is pretty heavy duty isnt big enough use to press on the bumb stops. I will try again tonight by soaking them in boiling water then grease up and see if I can force them on failing that I will go to my friend with a garage and use his press.
C Carter

I've found that a dab of swarfega works.

The conical ones are relatively easy. Some models have a flat 'button' spigot.

You just need lubrication and a good firm Screw

I'll get my hat!

I saw a show like that when I was last in Phuket.

Christian, vice or press won't do it IMO - it's the turning action that allows the rubber to deform and squirm into the hole.
David Smith

Fill a container with boiling water and pop the bump stops in for 10 minutes. Should give them a bit more flexibility - whack them straight out and on, with your lube of choice (I'm a silicon grease man...)
