MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Crank seal Conversion
this has probably been covered many times before. Does anyone have experience of fitting one of these and who's conversion requires the least dismantling of the engine. 1275cc btw. |

keith Calver has some very good results with his conversion, it may well be the best conversion to use is the one which has the best reliability. We have seen some impressive test results from Keith. Peter |

I have fitted one I bought from Peter May and it is crap I have had the engine in and out 5 times trying to make it work and I have had various issues, but I have now given up and he next ime I remove the engine I will refit the original equipment. I think my rear seal leaks 10 times more oil than originally. Didn't realise that others were on the market? |

Frontline do a conversion. |

Though I have never seen the FL and PM version next to each other they seem almost exactly the same. What is different/better in the KC one? I have never seen it wo sels it? I know of several happy users of the PM kit and have one I once intended on using (never did) looks like a good bit of work. |

Just noticed Richard that I think you have the original Toyota gearbox conversion. My car has this and I needed to substantially modify the conversion backplate to accommodate the rear seal. |

yes I have a Toyota box, do you think that the backplate is the cause of the problems with the seal? if so it sounds as if I may be better keeping the oil level low and putting up with the leak. |

I spoke to Ian Hulett who was racing his Swinging Sixties Lenham Sprite at Mallory and he has fitted a Keith Calver seal kit. He was very impressed with the kit. Apparently the engine in the Sprite was being run in for use in his new WSM Sprite which will no doubt be seen at Goodwood this year. I asked PM about his kit once and he readily admitted to me that he does not recommend it for racing engines... I'd suggest the Keith Calver set up on that basis. |

No Rich, the problem is that the Toyota back plate is thicker than the original spridget, I over came this by reducing the thickness in the crank area to match the original which it does so no issue there. I hink one of the issues is that the original seal has o be removed and thus this makes the new seal deal with a huge amount of oil which I think overcomes it. I think it could have been deigned to leave he old seal in place but I am possibly wrong. Peter did also say that racing engines revved oo quickly to allow the seal to work? Who knows? |
Robert (Bob) Midget Turbo |
Than what is different to the KC kit and where can it be bought? |

KC can be contacted via http://www.calverst.com/main.htm Regards JB |
