MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear hub thread

Can somebody confirm definitively which hub has the left hand thread. I have several manuals and they differ (only one version can be correct!)

I looked at the spinners on some wire wheels yesterday and noted that the spinner on the left /nearside / passenger side had a right hand thread (i.e. clockwise to fasten / anticlockwise to undo). I'm guessing that the same principal applies to the hub nut so the left hub has a right hand thread i.e. undoes anticlockwise). Is this correct?

Chris Hasluck

No; coincidentally I've just stripped an axle this morning and can confirm that it's lefthand side that has the LH thread hub nut. The nuts, if original, are actually marked UNSLH on the left side.

ETA - should have asked - front or back???
the fronts are both normal RH thread, I think.
David Smith

Left rear hub. So, turn clockwise to undo?
Chris Hasluck

Yes :-)
as I said, the nuts are marked - stamped on the outer face - have a look.
David Smith

The nuts on the rear are I believe the opposite way around to the spinners!

(OMG I can see it coming! "What is the torque setting for the rear nut". A BBS favourite, like front wheel bearings and sucking oil!)

David - thanks for your advice, helpful as usual.

Graeme - No I won't be posting a request for torque settings. I'll just give it a good heave on a big socket (I picked one up yesterday at an auto jumble).
Chris Hasluck

Phew! If you look in the archives it is one of those threads which never really reaches a conclusion although the best suggestion is over tighten till the thread fails and next time use a bit less. The problem is that in many cases the thread is pretty knackered and can fail at much lower torques than suggested. At least in my experience it did and that tends to rather colour one's judgement!
THe time the nut needs a lot of torque is undoing the left hand thread thinking it is right handed!
