MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Rear Suspension Attachment

I was thinking about what I might get up to at the weekend, and was considering mucking about attaching the rear suspension. I was looking at the usual diagrams and noticed that when attaching the rear bracket the boot floor the bolts are shown pointing downwards with a nut on from underneath.

On my car, there are captive nuts in the boot and, rightly or wrongly, the rear bracket was bolted upwards into the boot floor with no nut etc.

What is the best way to do this? Bolts into the captive nuts from inside the boot to act as studs and then a nut on from underneath?

Cheers,

I'd just bolt into the captive nuts, if you want to overdo it, then longer bolts into captive nut and then add a lock nut inside the car

Do some cars not have these captive nuts then?!

Malcolm.

the standard fit was bolts from underneath and nyloc nuts inside the boot. If you have captive nuts, that'll be fine. I'd put a spring washer on the bolt first.

ISTR that 1500s had captive nuts due to the extra stiffening in the boot.

Interesting, thanks guys. One of the lesser documented changes between 1275 and 1500 models.

Will just go with the original plan. Bolt upwards with a spring washer as David said.

If anyone needs a set of rear spring forward mountings I have a brand new set available cheap to a good home

I'm sure my 1972 RWA has captive nuts in the boot.

Just had a look, my '72 RWA doesn't. It is very early in the year and they seemed to be changing stuff all of the time so perhaps the later ones did.

likewise my 72 RWA has lock nuts & spring washers but not captive ones in the boot.
Rob Armstrong

no captive nuts on either '67 or'74 shells.
David Smith

perhaps L McInally has a Heritage shell(?)
