MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Repairing a Fuel Sender Float
Another day, tackling another problem. Tried to figure out what was up with my fuel gauge. Tested the gauge with a bunch of resistors and all seemed well, so must be the sender. Dropped tank, pulled sender, hey presto! Float is full of fuel. Anyone have a simple fix? I am thinking superglue over the seams or something? (Off to check for fuel resistant adhesives...) Cheers, Malcolm |

Might have sorted it by melting it a bit with a soldering iron. Can't really test it properly at the moment though. Thanks for your help everyone! :-D I really need to get a job... ha ha Malcolm |

My neighbour had the same problem with his Morgan, plastic float full of fuel. It is a fairly standard part and was quickly found as a replacement part online. IIRC the float has a groove in one end and just clips into a partial coil on the end of the float arm. |

Yup, exactly right David. Problem is I took everything apart, then decided I could really do with it back together this afternoon! So if it does work, even for just six months or so, win! If not, I haven't lost anything and now know what the problem is and can get a new float at a later date. Cheers, Malcolm |

OK, couldn't resist the temptation to go fill up and see if it works. So far so good, but I will see how it goes over a week or two. I guess it won't sink instantly if it is going to do it again. Malcolm |

Malc what glue did you use.. i maybe in the same boat im planing drilling a large hole in the boot floor drictly over the sending unit so if i do have to pull the sending unit agian i wont have to go thur the hassle of tearing every thing apart to get to the S.U. prop |

Prop, I just melted the plastic a bit with a soldering iron. Just be warned it sticks to your soldering iron and you will need to clean the tip off afterwards! Jury is still out as to whether it sealed it properly or not. Hole in the boot floor would be great. Getting the tank off wasn't all that hard, but getting it back on with all the fuel sloshing about in it was a bit like hard work! Cheers, Malcolm |

My sender also went AWOL when I dropped the tank and removed it to take a peek inside. Of course only discovered the fault when tank went back on....still not fixed.... |

With my car ive got the pan hard rod that uses the same holes as the gas tank to hold it into place so to get the gas tank off i got to deal with the rear suspension ....not a fun job |

Hey all, concluding this thread. It worked for a few weeks, but now gauge is reading nonsense again. Repair clearly hasn't worked and float is sinking again. Just gonna get a new one. Malcolm |

I checked with auto zone and they and other parts stores have universial sending units ...needs looking into a little more but i may go that direction... considering its $10 cheaper then moss and an extra $15 for shipping and handling ... and the universials are ethinol compliant prop |
