MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ribcase Noises

Have noticed that my ribcase 1275 gearbox is getting noisier - it not 1st but in other gears it 'chunters' especially when power is reapplied - even in 4th.
The box was reconditioned when I did the Heritage rebuild about 4000 miles ago.Synchros are all very good.
It seemed to have a lot of slop in the gear stick even then, fitted a new anti zizzle kit etc.

Is it likely to be shot layshaft and bearings etc -other ideas - its also started the oil slick on the garage floor ! - clean oil for a change.

Have a spare or two and thinking of getting one built up and swap it over - seen Klassic trans recommended - any others more local and concerned getting layshafts / bearings etc of correct spec,

Not yet ready for type 9 route (although have one lurking in a shed somewhere).

I think it was recently mentioned that Peter May supplies decent layshafts.

Don't you fancy rebuilding it yourself?

Dave,

I stripped a Morry Minor one for practice once and I'm still finding ball bearing around the workshop !

Also I'm not sure I really now what is O.K to reuse either - but neither did the company that rebuilt mine !

I have a couple of fairly good boxes and the odd new gear and should hopefully be able to get a good one built up - don't want to have to remove the engine too many times !

Ken at Klassic will use layshafts from Peter May if you ask, they aren't that many miles apart IIRC.
David Smith

how old is the spigot bearing in the crankshaft? I had a noisy zizzle on overrun following a gearbox rebuild, (new bearings etc but I reused the layshaft as it was in good shape) which the anti rattle kit did not cure. A new spigot bearing seems to have sorted it!

Hi Richard,
Peter May will sell you a gearbox. A long way to go to collect but a very nice man when you get there.
I don't know how the quality compares with Klassic trans.

I've got a Klassik Trans box, fitted it last summer - not done enough miles to comment on reliability, but it does seem pretty good - cost £330 ish.
