MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ring gear size?

Are there two different sizes of ring gear for the 1500? I just tried to bolt a starter motor to my spare block and there was no way that it was going to engage, this happened with standard motors and the new Isuzu motor (standard motor pictured. I can shim the motor away from the back-plate, however even if I do that the gear won't engage.

Oh, the current ring gear is 18mm wide, from tooth to flywheel.

good question....I think ther may have been differance because the 1500 is a trumph engine ... and the 1500 was used in the spitfire??? but had differances

There is supposed to be an aluminium collar / spacer between the starter motor and the backplate. Its around 12mm thick. Do you have one fitted?
Guy Weller

the standard starter motor uses the collar - plus a thin steel shim too.
David Smith

That picture was taken with the aluminium spacer in place, adding two steel shims clears the shaft. However the motor gear hits the flywheel as it moves back along the spiral (Bendix?) shaft, preventing it from engaging.

The ring gear in my car is 12mm from tooth tip to flywheel, 6mm smaller than the gear on my spare engine. I assume that someone just put the wrong part on when it was put together last.
