MG Midget and Sprite Technical - roller release bearing

having sourced a recon box from Hardy (thanks Allen) I need some info about roller release bearings. I've got one in my box of bits, it has a plastic covering over the roller - should this be removed? do I ned to do anything to the cover plate - seem to remember the plates on the fingers should be removed?
TIA

David
On the roller release bearings that I have fitted I have taken the "bearing pad" ( cant think of the correct term) off the Clutch cover fingers so that the bearing runs on the fingers.
Carbon thrusts sometimes come with a plastic cover to protect the carbon in transit.

Hi Alan,
How did you get the thrust pad off the clutch fingers please as I put a new clutch in but bottled taking off the thrust pad in case I wrecked the clutch.I would like to do it in future as I have a roller bearing that I would like to fit
Thanks

David,

I've a copy of the instructions from Peter May's roller bearing kit and can take a photo if it will help at all?

hi David,
Yes please. My Peter may instructions just say carefully remove the thrust pad !I did have a go with the old clutch today, but ended up cutting the back of with a dremel. If there is an easier way I would love to know

Thanks

Mark,

it looks like my Peter May instructions are the same as yours - they state
"1. Carefully remove the thrust pad from thr clutch cover to allow the bearing to run directly on the clutch fingers.
2. Fit the release bearing assembly to the clutch fork in the usual way."

Aould have scanned them but my laptop is currently refusing to acknowledge it has a scanner attached to it!

Seriously chaps. Give it a tap. It seems scary. A firm tap and the fingers spring and the pad falls out.

I can confirm Alan's last statement is correct...

A smart tap (or two) it is then...!

Will post once it's done.

Thanks.

Hi,

do you use an other than the standart 1275 Clutch pushrod? I have also the roller from P. May, and have bled my clutch a hundred times but it isn't disengaging.
any suggetions?

Is it possible to fit a roller release bearing to a 1098 engine keeping in mind that the clutch is different to a 1275?

Bernie, I think the answer is yes as I seem to have a 1098 roller release bearing (which does not fit a 1275..).

I got a roller release bearing in the 5 speed kit that I bought from the Morris Minor Centre, but it wouldn't operate properly because it wanted to travel through an arc instead of straight along the 1st motion shaft tube and consequently jammed, so I went back to using a carbon thrust which works fine, but I would like a roller one for longevity of the bearing. I suppose I'll wait until the carbon one wears out and think again about it then.

Hi
There are two types of pivot mount for the clutch yoke on T9 conversions.
The original type has a pivot hole.A carbon thrust works with this with the imput shaft tube cover removed on the T9. As you say it arcs.
There is now a mount which is slotted and if used with a roller release allows it to move to and fro along the imput shaft rubber.
Uwe
The 1275 rod is used. Do you have wear & slack in the system. Yokes can bend over time. There is an inspection hole on the nearside of the bellhousing. Perhaps if you look inside with someone pressing the clutch pedal you may be able to work out what is wrong. You will,of course, need to raise the car so that you can get beneath it

"rubber" Where did that come from?
I mean, of course, the original tube covering the imput shaft.

Alan. I used my standard 1098 fork, so maybe that was the problem. As I say, the carbon bearing is OK for now, so if and when the time comes I'll get the slotted mount, a 1275 fork and a roller bearing. Thanks for the info.

Alan,
Subliminal - you associate rubber with putting something on your shaft.
