MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Routing of operating cable for heater flap
Then the second problem I have with the front radiator bullhead panels is that neither panel on the LHS has any provision for the cable to operate the heater air inlet flap at the front of the car. Does anyone have a picture of this arrangement ? I can determine the holes for the oil cooler hoses, and wiring seems obvious, but how does the operating cable route through the panels? |

I can't remember how old you want your car to be but I think it's around the time when the heater flap moved from the front of the car to being screwed to the heater box if not you might have to wait for LHD pre-67/68(?) owners or workshop illustrations perhaps |

The butterfly for the heater intake located up at the grille area was '71 model year only (according to Terry Horler's book). I don't recall if it includes a detailed enough photo to see how the cable got there, though... Norm |

I thought it was much earlier - '67-ish?! |

here's a pic of the front-mounted heater intake flap. From the angle of the remaining cable (it's been cut before I got to see it) it must run across to the left side and then back to the cockpit, it would seem logical to follow a similar path to the bonnet release cable.

My car is a 71 and the flapper was on the heater box....USA spec |

I am still scratching my head here, I can't see why the cable needs to route all around the engine bay to come in at the right angle in David's photo yet have the switch mounted at the right hand end of the dash (LHD here). Bit I also can't see an obvious more direct route that doesn't require a hole in the radiator. Does anyone have an idea of how long the original cable is for these front flap cars? |
Dominic Clancy |
The control cable for the front mounted flap is 48" long, apparently. The later 1275s are 28" long and the 1500 23". |

Thanks, a piece of wire will now be used to try various options in the 48" range |

I wouldn't have thought an extra 20" would be enough to go around the engine bay. |

>>... yet have the switch mounted at the right hand end of the dash (LHD here).<< eh? isn't it located off-centre of dash? to help us with a poor memory or to give you quicker relevant answers it would help if you were to put up your Vehicle Profile with details of what year of car you want yours to be - if you want to of course photos can say a lot too |
