MG Midget and Sprite Technical - spigot shaft od
Does anyone have a pretty accurate measurement for the spigot shaft? I have measured a new bush at 0.503" and wondered if the shaft was dead on 0.5" or maybe under? Peter |

Which shaft do you mean? |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
The spigot shaft of the gearbox (input shaft?), the one that goes through the driven plate and into the bush in the end of the crank. Peter |

Peter I have measured two that I have cut off and use as clutch alignment tools and they are, admittedly with some wear, both 0.003 under 0.5 inch. Alan |

I've also measured two and they both come in at .496" |

Give me 20 minutes... I have an exposed shaft thats almost in mint condition...(or was claimed to be) Prop |

What can you use to measure something that small? |

Well...maybe im not so mint after all My mic is off by .001 I took 2 readings at 90 degrees apart...1st was .520 and 2nd was .522 Prop |

If the sprint internet speeds up I can post a photo of my mic readings Prop |

That seems a little large Prop, unless you have a non standard box like a five speed? We are thinking 0.5" finished ID once drifted into place. To be on the safe side we tidied the ID to 0.501" as tested by a go-no-go gauge. I am happy to know the size is 0.496" and will rest easy knowing the customer will be able to fit the box to engine OK. We tried measuring spare cranks with used bushes in but they were like buckets!! Thanks for the feed back Peter |

Peter. I measured 0.496" with a 1" micrometer measuring in .001" increments and 0.497" with a dial caliper measuring in .001" increments. With a micrometer measuring in .0001" increments, the nose of the first motion shaft/input shaft measured 0.4964". I would think, based on my experience as a machinist and gunsmith, that your 0.501" internal diameter should work just fine for the spigot/pilot bushing. A slight chamfer on the back edge of the bushing will help the first motion shaft fit into the bushing more easily on assembly. Hope all is well with you and yours and business is staying good. Les |

Thanks for the info Les. We are all fine and the business plods on as usual :) Peter |
