MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Spin on oil filter conversion choice....
My 1293 engine has a bolt on oil filter cannister and I would like to change to a spin on type to save on the faffing about (it also has a full length sump guard fitted) and make it the same as the 1275. I have looked back at previous threads but what I want to know is who makes the best version? Mosscow do one for £70 but they also seem to be supplied by Mocal and Flexolite (at around £45)---has anyone any prior experience of any of these and any tips/advice? thanks, John S |

Hi John I am looking to do likewise on my frogeye. I cant advise you on the best one to buy, but I have fitted one before on my other car, so can offer a couple of tips. First the obvious - make sure you remove all of the old seal or it will leak. Sounds easy but sometimes the seal can go hard and break in to bits.In fact, when I fitted mine, the "old" seal was good, so I left it in place, just coated it with a little oil. The other point is I've seen a lot of criticism that the Moss one is badly designed and leaks. I didnt have a problem. The critics say the shoulder of the bolt in the adaptor, if not filed down, prevents the filter being screwed all the way down. In my mind it all depends on the filter you use. Some have a domed end, and others are flat. So the former can cause problems, whereas the latter should screw home without a problem. Good luck Graham |

Hi John, I picked up a Mini/Metro filter housing off eBay relatively cheap, bolts straight on. Mark |

When I did my Frog I had one hanging around my garage that came from a Mini and as Mark says it bolted straight on. The only thing I had a problem with is that the old oil feed pipe didn't line up well. I think I replaced that with the Mini one as well. Rob |

All you need available from Minispares. Alan |

I was looking to add an insert to avoid removing the filter head as it is one of the few parts that does not leak oil. So as advised I took a look at a new head from Minispares which would indeed be a cheap option but they don't have any in stock at present, nor do morrisminorspares nor Charles ware. I will wait until they are available as a new one is as cheap as a second hand one off ebay. Have gone off the insert idea as they only fit the Perolator heads which have a removable part in the head unit----nothing is ever simple! In the meanwhile will stick with the old bolt, spring, washer plate system. Thanks for the input all, good luck with your conversion Graham---there were a couple of complete second hand units on ebay when I last looked. John |

I have a spare filter head from an MG Metro. It is the more solid long-bolt design, but it is slightly longer than a standard Spridget filter head, as it had to accommodate a water/oil heat exchanger. The overall length is 4.25" Unfortunately, I don't have a Spridget to measure in order to check if there is enough clearance for it to fit.
