MG Midget and Sprite Technical - starter motor bushes

OK, Chaps...here's the thing:- I replaced the starter on my 1275 [from Bull Motif Spares in Winchcombe..excellent service etc..] but it IS new and I want to rebuild the original and refit that...but...the armature bushes are pressed into the end brackets which are made moulded with a lip to prevent the bush from just being drifted all the way through. The bushes are fitted flush against this lip so...any ideas about getting the old bushes out?
many thanks
David Cox

...someone off board has told me: screw a tap in part way and pull the bush from the bracket...

If they are still too tight to pull use the tap to thread them thru, place a spacer such as a socket with an opening greater than the O. D. of the bush against the housing. Get a bolt to match the thread and a large washer. Put the washer on the bolt, the bolt thru the spacer & thread it into the bushing. As you continue to tighten the bolt it will draw the bushing out into the socket.

The bushes are made from a crumbly material so, if you haven't got a tap large enough you can run a hacksaw blade through as much as you can and then collapse the bush in with a pin punch
Don't forget to prelube your new bushes before fitting them
They 'should' be sintered bronze and sometimes come dry--sometimes prelubed

thanks, both. It's a fab day here so I'm driving it not repairing it....

What Willie said, plus the padsaw blade of a Swiss Army knife is ideal for this. Bloody sharp and nice and stiff. Easier than hacksaw blades IMO.
Doesn't matter if you score the bore of the bearing seat a little bit as it won't be exposed by the new bush.
