MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Stuck oil pressure valve

I can't get my oil pressure valve out! I've tried needle nose pliers, including bending one set. I can move the valve in and out about 3/8" that's it.

My thought at this point is to bend a thin rigid piece of metal and try pushing/pulling it out from the oil return hole located just above.

Any other ideas welcome.
Thx. Phil

try a twist drill just a bit bigger than the hollow in the valve, twist and lock it in place, continue twisting and gently pull at the same time.

thanks David, I thought of that as well. Does anyone have a spare valve they could measure for me.

I can look tomarrow... I know I saved mine, im just not sure where its at

I cant remember what I used... I want to say an ez out or might have been a male pipe thread plug

The plunger (valve ) is just pot metal, nothing fancy

It should be fairly close to the same out side dia as the spring just a hair bigger

I whittled a piece of wood into the appropriate sized dowel such that I could force it into the valve and "dig it out". Once I'd got the size of dowel right, literally took about 30 secs.
Good luck

Hi Phil,

A couple of years ago I had a similar problem with my 1275 powered Bugeye running a 7 port cross flow head and while driving the car I saw the oil pressure running from the normal 75 to 105psi hitting the gauge internal stop. I knew that it was a relief valve problem, but what or why? After getting home that day at reduced speed OK the next day I proceeded to remove the relief valve. After removing the twin 40 DCOE's and starter motor. Like what has been suggested, I tried using the shank (the back end) of a twist drill to remove the valve but no success. I eventually removed the motor and G/B then thought if I was to drill a partial hole for an easy out or tap a partial hole in the valve that it would rotate anyway. We all know that normally removing a valve is just a matter of inserting ones little finger into the blind hole in the relief valve and pull it out. In the end I drilled a 13/64" hole about 3/8" deep, and NO the valve didn't rotate, then used a 1/4" NC plug/bottom tap and achieved 3 or 4 full threads. Removed the tap wrench but left the tap in the valve then used a pair of vice pliers and pulled the valve out using a foot against the engine block. Much to my surprise there were score marks down the side of the valve and showing the valve to other club members one said that if it was a Mini block they could understand as you could bits of metal from the G/B and jam the valve. I have since learnt that the relief valve seat can be removed as the other side of the seat is a flat shoulder and crud builds up at the shoulder and can dislodge down the track as in my case as the motor had done 13000km's since squeaky clean engine rebuild. If you would like to know how to remove the seat just ask? John

I got the valve out this afternoon. I took a 1/2" wire brush and deburred the hole. Then I got a new pair of small neeedlenose pliers with sharp tips that I bent out at right angles. I spread the pliers inside the valve and pulled the valve out.
New valve, spring and washers ordered from Moss.
Thanks for the ideas and support.
