MG Midget and Sprite Technical - T9 Gearbox Mounts

anamnesis, United Kingdom Guy, the manifold I have has the same problem you had. It emerges below the chassis rail a bit too low, and angle down a bit too. I'd thought perhaps it was a consequence of installing the T9 box. I adjusted the gbox mount as much as I could, limited by the bell housing hitting the heater tray, and gbox remote change hitting the inside of the tunnel. What adjustments did you make and how? The rear of my car's engine is slightly low, despite my car being nose down. This is most likely due to the T9 mounting, which means oil collects above the rear valves rather than draining evenly along the length of the head. Thank you, Karl |

Karl, my T9 installation was a DIY job so I don't know the arrangements for the other kits supplied. In my case the rear of the gearbox is supported on a single rubber block - a Ford fiesta engine mount. There is scope for some adjustment in that support with home made shims and washers, but whatever adjustment there is would I presume be limited by the clearance needed between the gearbox top and the underside of the heater plinth.
My gearbox also has a shortened gear remote extension. I imagine with the standard box the remote must extend further under the lower part of the tunnel behind the original gear lever position. This may further restrict how high the tail end of the gearbox can be lifted? |

As Guy said Karl re the length of the remote; mine's unaltered, so is longer. That combined with hitting the heater tray, slopes the engine down at the rear.
We are not alone. I just spoke with maniflow. I explained, and he confirmed they are aware that fitting a t9 drops the rear of the engine. He had a bloke come up to their works to demonstrate the problem, and they modified (bent) his manifold to correct the problem. On mine, I packed under the gbox mount as far as I could, and then bent my exhaust for the rest. That involved nothing more than supporting the front end of the main pipe on a couple of wooden blocks, and standing/jumping on the section in between. Cheap abd cheerful. 🤣🤣. But it works a treat, and I haven't grounded. But then my Sprite isn't lowered. You can see how much when sat next to this length of scaffold. About 3/4" at the deepest. ![]() ![]() |

Yes, some comfort that it is a known thing. I will see what the scope is for packing the mounts. A few mm would make the difference in my case. I did similar to fit my unbranded exhaust manifold to a new maniflow systen and under a Mangoletsi inlet manifold. Agricultural but functional. |

My problem at that time wasn't just that the manifold directed the exhaust pipe downwards, caused by the t9 tilting the engine back. That was easy to work around in the time-honoured agricultural manner. But in addition, the front bend under the car was too low. Or rather, the vertical parts of the maniflow were too long. Arie's solution is a neat one assuming the clamps maintain a gas tight seal. |
