MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Trunk / boot lid adjustment
I have noticed that the boot lid sits high on the front left corner looking from the back of the car. How can I adjust this, or is it a case of using brute force to bend the hinges to let it settle correctly? |
Dominic Clancy |
You are correct, the hinge needs bending. It is not uncommon on the later cars with the telescopic stay. If someone tries to close the bootlid without releasing the stay, it bends the hinge and sits high exactly as you describe. |

Nice to see multilingual thread title to assist Prop! |

I too have hi left trunkbootitius, anyone have a technique to share for the fix besides the 800 pound gorilla bash? |
Bob Ketcham |
It took a firm press down on the offending corner with the boot lid open, and that cured the problem until the boot lid was left open overnight, then it was back to the same state as before the gorilla action. |

So is it the mounting area on the lid or the car that is getting deformed? Or both? |
Trevor Jessie |
It is normally the hinge. They are quite flexible. |
Dave O'Neill2 |
Well if it is the hinge, then those would be easy to reinforce. |

Thanks for this, I only just noticed this on mine today so will have to put my big arms on next time I am working on her to get that hinge bent back nicely... I suspect the reason for my deformation was when I welded a sheet of mild steel across the dividing section between the boot/trunk and the driving compartment... My guess is the heat generated from that deformed the hinge. |
