MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Warped quarter light?

I have messed with this a few times and can't seem to close up this gap at the top of the quarter light. It makes me think that the 1/4 light frame is warped as the 1/4 light window fit is also poor.

Anyone else come across this problem?

Or any idea what I am doing wrong and how I can correct it?

Cheers,
Malcolm

Can't tell from the pic if its has a twist or not, but the angle of the quarter light in respect to the screen pillar is adjusted by moving the foot bracket on the base of the quarter light/door glass channel at the bottom of the door.

You would probably have to slacken the quarter light holding down extended nuts/into door top flange also to effect any change in angle.

I had one unit in the basement so there are 3 pictures. Note that the chrome piece overall does have a slight slight curve.

Also, you should be able to take the interior door card off to access the lowest point of the chrome "rail" - and assuming your door is not "out" of vertical alignnment - you should be able to tip the top closer towards the windshield after you loosen up the hardware.

Best of luck with your Fine Tuning, etc.

Malcolm, what is the door to screen angle like? I had a similar problem with mine and I realised the rubber seal was stopping the top going right in. I think mine was the result of grabbing the top of the screen to climb out which pulled back over time. Adjusting the screen angle sorted it.

What is it that you are doing?

Malcolm IMHO it's badly bent and very difficult to straighten without cracking the welds. The bottom adjustment may take some of the evil out but not all. Find a good used one and change it over.

It looks like a combination of bad adjustment of both the 1/4 light and screen. The screen to 1/4 light seal seems to be fouling the 1/4 light.
Adjust the angle of the 1/4 light as described above. The screen is secured by two bolts each side, allowing the rake of the screen to be altered. One of the holes is slotted. Using both methods of adjustment, you should be able to get it perfect.

The windscreen - 1/4 light rake adjustment is ok. It is just the top front corner sticks out.

Right, I am going with Rod on this one, time for a new one.

I have now adjusted everything up as far as it would go and it still pokes out at the top.

Side view shows where it starts to go pear shaped, just above the window hinge.

Cheers,
Malcolm

P.S. In fact, having just uploaded the pic, I am sure I can see some sort of line just above the hinge. Off to investigate...

Malcolm Le Chevalier

Wondered if it was evidence of damage, no just a wee scratch.

Off the the eBay for some window shopping!

The line between the quarter light and screen seems to diminish near the top - should be constant and allow room for the rubber seal- does the screen need to go out a bit at the top ?
Could the seal be displacing the quarterlight if too tight ?
richard boobier

Richard I agree with you and that is the point I was making earlier as that was the problem with mine.

Have you found a replacement yet?

I think I have a spare or two.
Dave O'Neill 2

No Dave, not been looking for one yet. Feel free to drop me an email if you like. Where in the W. Midlands are you? I might be passing sometime soon.

Just concluding this thread. Got a new 1/4 light, thanks to Dave. Fit is now much better, although still maybe not perfect. At least now there is no gap at the top.

It did also need some adjustment of windscreen rake, but it wasn't just a rake issue.

Two wee jobs to complete: 1. New hinge bit. 2. Clean the blood off everything... stupid f-ing doors!

Cheers,

I find that the friction of the rubber against the stainless quarter light can cause it to be held/forced out of position - especially with new/ish rubbers - probably not made to original spec !

I use a rubber lubricant (no sniggering at the back !) a sort of stick / candle product (made for doors/ironmongery ISTR) on the rubber and it does help.
