MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Weeping tank pipe union

It’s a pain. Tweeked it before but thread not good in tank. Would hylamare help?
Have old school get together curry in Wolvo termorrer so any suggestions to get me there and back (or at least there) much appreciated.
Dave Squire

Have you tried plumber's PTFE tape? A couple of wraps might help.
C Mee

Good thinking, have rolls of the stuff. Excellent.

Thanks.
Dave Squire

If petrol tank connection then the seal isn't with the thread but rather the nut pushes the cone into the pick-up pipe and into the tank boss to form a seal. Adding something like PTFE tape is masking another problem such as damage to the cone or the other surfaces.
David Billington

I know Dave. I think the tank thread is suspect. Any ideas on a proper long term fix? It’s a 7 gallon tank. No leaks apart from this.
Dave Squire

Dave,
I had exactly this and tried cleaning connections and to tank and after that didn't work replacing cone nipple and tube nut complete with copper pipe but this didn't work either.

You can buy just the nipple to solder on to your existing pipe and you can buy the tube nut seperately too.

After tightening I noticed the nipple had a grove in it, whether this was the cause of the leak or around the solder(?) of the female connection int the tank I don't know.

As DavidB pointed out to me too PTFE or sealant won't help so save your time.

The new tube nut at least was 15mm spanner IIRC, the previous one was rounded so I don't know what its correct size was.

My thread on this will be in the Archives, from about last Oct/Nov I'd guess.

I ended up fitting a new tank (5.83 gal, 7 I wish).

Sorry the 1500 tank is £130 more than 1275 but IIRC you do get 7 gal tank or if you can accept the gallon+ less it will fit apparently.
Nigel Atkins

There are some tube nuts which are too short! Check yours. The short ones tighten up against the shoulder of the nut before the gland at the end of the pipe has nipped up and sealed. I guess that an over-deep thread on the tank bush would have the same result, if you have bought a replacement tank?
GuyW

It was all original. It still is apart from the broke tube nut that won’t come out!
No sundown with curry in Wolvo.
Good news is I ordered a tank and pipe with tube nut before close of play today so could be here tomorrow.

Hey ho.

Thanks everyone.
