MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Welding. Is this real?

Surely this must be a con.

I love the "OFFICIAL TEST" very scientific, looks as much use as using a meter to determine if a plug or HT lead is passed its best. 🤣

Slightly mis-named I think, it's more brazing than welding. Not new (search for Lumiweld), although I have never tried it.

It won't be difficult to beat the parent metal strength of the aluminium once you have annealed it nicely with your torch! ;-)

And what does a bear, let alone a comfy one, know about metalwork anyway? :-D

Malc, I think even calling it brazing is generous, more like soldering and I have seen various comments along those lines for other makes too.

I've used Lumiweld many times. It's pretty good, with a little care and patience.
The critical thing is cleanliness. The work needs to be spotless and free of oxide layer (so far as possible). They even used to include a stainless steel wire brush specifically for the purpose.
It wasn't cheap, although not prohibitive for small jobs.
It even worked on Birmabrite, which is the alloy that old Landroversaurus bodies used. Also used to repair a mounting flange on a prewar carburettor, albeit with my heart in my mouth as it was irreplaceable!
I'd imagine this stuff is similar or maybe better, since technology has moved on a bit.
I'd be happy to give it a try.

Some may recall my self-imposed fiasco with a starter motor when I diligently removed all remnants of the brush stranded copper leads before realising that the coil was in fact made of aluminium. I used this stuff in an attempt to fuse a copper pad onto the end of the aluminium wire, that I could then solder my replacement brush leads to. It sort of worked, though not well enough to give me confidence in the long term reliability of the starter.

I wouldnt recommend it.

Some of our guys weld deep underwater with no hyperbaric chamber. I still don't get it.
