MG Midget and Sprite Technical - What order tp check things

I know its been on here but the last time I logged on was probably a year ago. One of us has an idiots guide to the order of checks - who and what please.
Dave Price

Good question ;o)
Dave O'Neill 2

It's easiest to subdivide into groups;

Wheels and tyres
Suspension and steering
Brakes
Fluid levels
Plugs, ignition, distributor and timing
Valve clearances
Carb/idle adjustment and fuel supply
Belt, fan and radiator

Start the car and look for fluid and exhaust leaks.

When hot, change the oil and filter.

Later:

Lights, wipers electrics etc
Interior, seat belts.

You can also make lists within the groups depending on the detail you need.

I think it was nigel that had a well thought out check off list for maintance

Is it maintance you checking off or is there a problem that needs to be sorted ?

Prop and the Blackhole Midget

Prop - Nigels list rings a bell - I was specifically thinking about getting the engine running smoothly
Dave Price

What? Why would Nigel have an idiots guide to something? :-
Lawrence Slater

...... not if you have the Owner's Handbook available.
Graeme Williams

Dave, are you thinking of (for engine) -

• set up tappets, CB points, plugs, timing and mixture in that order, if you have to adjust any item in that chain then you’ll also need to check, and adjust if required, all the items that follow it in the chain

for car -
BRAKES
tyres
steering
suspension
lights, windows and mirrors

top priority is always brakes and one of the least is engine running - they run even when not serviced and attended to, of course not always that well :)
Nigel Atkins

Nigel - as I wade through the Haynes manual setting up the mixture and timing have you got a condensed idiots guide that you can send over. Trying to flick around the book is driving me potty.

Hi Dave,
no sorry I haven't

probably be some John Twist videos that help
Nigel Atkins

Cheers - I'll have a search around.
Dave Price

Dave,
there's this one for carb tuning and there's another one, very early video (around first 10 or 20 IIRC) - 147 MG Carburetter Tuning - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nvGLgO6pj0&feature=plcp
Nigel Atkins

these will help with background understanding of carbs -

I have already subscribed to John University motors youtube site - good stuff on there - Thanks Nigel for reminding me.
