MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wheel colour

Frogeye wheels are apparently in a silver referred to as "Aluminium"
Is there a specific colour code reference for this shade that a paint supplier would recognise?
GuyW

Good question Guy - I've been wondering the same thing! You can buy 'steel wheel silver' but that seems a bit vague. I've got some Triumph Silver Sheen that I used on my Tiger 90 which seems a good match to the original so I might give that a go. Not sure if cellulose is right for wheels though?

I'm still painting the shell at the moment so it will be some time before I need to do the wheels!
John Payne

Guy,

If it is available there, you might check out Hammerite silver in a non-hammered finish. I thought it looked pretty right on my B.

FWIW I'll find out what it was that I chose, Guy. I did go through lots of silvers with the painter, but of course in the end it was my taste, not proper history.

I agree with Charley. Satin silver non-hammered is good.

Nick and Cherry Scoop

Ooooh! Nice new tyres too!

I am not especially after the factory silver. But need to order some paint and if I just say I want silver he will just laugh at me as there must be dozens of different shades of silver, given that for quite a few years sliver has been far and away the most common colour on modern cars. Except of course for the black ones!

Can one spray hammerite?
GuyW

Guy,

Yes, certainly you can spray Hammerite. I bought it in a quart can and sprayed it with a touch up gun. I think it might also be available in a spray can. I don't have a good pic of the wheels, but maybe you can tell something from the attached. (or maybe not, I just looked at the photo here and it is too small)

I have silver Hammerite smooth in a rattle can.

I believe Hammerite suggest that you use their expensive thinner if you want to spray their paint, but I have used standard celly thinner when brushing it.
Dave O'Neill 2

To add to what Dave said, I don't remember what I thinned it with, but I know I did not have any Hammerite thinner.

Nice little pebble garden you have there Charley
William Revit

I should have said smooth, not satin.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Yes, Willy. It was quite a chore moving those to the back yard when I was doing my landscaping.

Charley

I expect you needed the GT for that.

I have tried painting wheels - rattle can admittedly - with various shades of silver c/w laquer in an attempt to protect the basecoat. Hopeless. It tends not to last and peels way horribly. Granted this was on moderns, and over alloy wheels.

Personally were I to try again, I would seriously consider powder coating.
Oggers

Guy, just had my wheels powder coated and thought you might be interested in how they turned out. They aren’t perfect and definitely not an exact match for the original colour but they’ve come out quite well I think and I’m happy with my choice. Cost me £25 per wheel for blasting and coating which considering I’d have spent at least £20-£30 on paint if I’d done them myself isn’t bad. Hopefully I’ll be able to attach a photo at some stage.
John Payne

That is a ridiculously low price John!
I searched around and couldn't find anyone doing 13" wheels for less than £50 each, though my son has just got some 21" alloys done for £ 65 each.
GuyW

Do you have DupliColour there
I use their rattle can and it sprays on magic--
Duplicolour
DE 1615 Aluminium Ceramic Engine enamel
It's a gloss but not 'over' shiney and dries as hard as a rock

William Revit

Is stove-enamelling an option?

I had my wheels stove-enamelled about 30 years ago.

Dave O'Neill 2

Pic time!

John Payne

And the back.

John Payne

Yes I thought £25 each was a bit of a bargain so I quickly said yes. Viking powder coating near Lincoln if anyone is near enough to want something doing. He also did the engine mounts, boot gussets, front bumper chassis mounts and a couple of other bits in satin black for £15 on top. I'm not a massive fan of powder coating and won't be having any of the under bonnet bits like heater box done with it, I'll stick with paint for them I think.
John Payne

Hi John,
On my MGB i had my rocker box powder coated & was delighted with the results as per attached.
Cheers, Charles
