MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wheels & Tyres

While it is common knowledge that different wheels and/or tyres should not be on the same axle, is there an issue with say, with 175 x 13 x 70 on the rear and 165 x 13 x 70 on the front?

not from an MOT point of view, but inadvisable as you cold change the handling of the vehicle.
David Smith

MGFs generally have narrower front tyres than rear as supplied by the factory. I honestly don't think you would notice the 10mm difference on a road going Midget unless you habitually take corners on the limits of adhesion.

MGF's an for example a certain back wards engineerd german marque usualy have wider tyres at the rear.
But this has a reason!
Just think for a minute where those cars have the engine.....

So while it is possible why would you with plenty of cheap good the same sized tyres are available?

Why would you .... I could replace my tolit paper with poison ivy, but aside from saving a few pennies per wipe... why would you ?

I run 205/55/15's on the front and 225/50/15's on the rear of my Minor with no issues , simply immense grip :)

'twas just a thought.

A further complication might be that the larger tyres are on 4.5j rims and the smaller tyres on 5j. Perhaps that would go some way to making the effect of the tyre difference more equal.

Onno, I've thrown enough money at the car without chucking away perfectly good tyres. :0)

It was good to hear from someone who has actually had some experience of this.

175 on 4.5 rims? going to be pretty jelly-ish like that. I thought mine was OK on 175 on 5 inch rims but the more vertical sidewalls on the new setup are miles ahead in terms of steering feel and cornering prowess.

if it has 175 on the 4.5, and the 165 on the 5, then it's possibly going to be really unbalanced. 165 on the 5 will be the best from that choice.

As for tyre cost, I got uniroyals for 35 quid each - less than a tank of fuel. why stint on the only thing that keeps you on the road?
