MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Where to grease on clutch.

I am replacing the clutch on my 1098 Sprite. What are your thoughts on grease? Just a light coat on spline? What about release bearing pivot points? Any other tips appreciated.

I'd coppaslip the bearing pivots and the spring steel retaining clips, also the pivot bolt through the release arm. The splines I'd clean thoroughly and spray with light machine oil then wipe clean, thus leaving a thin layer in the troughs.

Thanks david, there is a small tube of grease with the clutch kit. Any idea if this is meant for the spline?
A Potter

no idea, suggest you ask the supplier.

Personally, i've never lubed any parts of any of the clutches that i've fitted over the years as i'm of the opinion that the dust from the friction plate will find it's way in to the grease/oil and turn it in to 'gunge' that will cause 'stiction' (which is like friction but sticky :) )

Having said that, I went out and started my 1500 that has been untouched in the garage for over a year and the clutch was siezed (friction plate to flywheel I think), after a few minutes to warm up the a bit of pumping the was a bit of a 'clunk' and in she went!!!

smooth as silk now!! ;-)

I'll make a point now of starting the old girl on a regular basis...

John,

as I've put it elsewhere already today I'll might as well put it here too (and no doubt upset others)

to my mind starting the engine and running up to temp may help the engine and cooling system and possibly just about get the charge back into the battery but the car really needs to be driven to keep wrinkles away (and know about) on brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, clutch, transmission, electric motors, horns ect. - just keeping things used and moving

just my ray of sunshine for the day :)

A bit of grease in sprigot bush! The bush should be sintered bronze and oil inpregnated but it won't last forever so a bit of grease in there doesn't go a stray.

With the engine running and your foot on the clutch the input shaft isn't turning when the car's stationary. So no lube in there isn't good. Don't overdo it though.
