MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Windscreen & hood
Well i'm now confused... thought i understood how the hood should fit.... Some photos attached, but just to explain, i'm trying to sort out an early hood fitment to my car, its never had one on before so i'm starting from scratch, i bought a selection of lift the dot fasteners etc and the two tear drops that fit on the back and understood that the front of the windscreen should have a slot in it, However my windscreen has a slot behind the glass, no problem i thought, just remove it from the two side supports , turn it around and put it back again. However i dont see how that is possible... pls have a look at pictures below.. could it be that PO has installed the windscreen in the wrong slot ? ![]() |

OK, thanks Rob, its as i suspected, wrong slot, and maybe back to front rubber as well,,,, Sooooo, how difficult is this to fix ? ive never done a windscreen before...... zero chance of a new windscreen out here if i break it... |

yes the filler strip is on the inside. |

Never done one of these windscreens before. Others I have done were the fixed into body aperture type. e.g. Mini. Many, many years ago. Rob |

i'm a bit nervous of trying it, the archives are full of problems, though most of them seem to be the later type screen. New rubbers are about 60 gbp with some NLS from Moss... maybe time to get extra inventive with my hood project, i was going to have to make it anyway as the std one wont fit over my roll bar...... Co*k... as James May would say...... |

Modern screen rubbers are made from plastic and not as flexible as the old days. If the one fitted is ok I would stay with that. The way I remember fitting on a mini is to fit the rubber to the glass. Wrap strong cord in the groove in the rubber with two loose ends at the bottom. Lubricate with soapy water. Offer up the screen from the inside locating the channel in the rubber at the bottom with the strings outside. You need two people. The one outside pulls the string so forcing the rubber to pop out of the aperture. Encourage it all the way around. Do left string a bit then right string a bit till it is fitted all round. Finally fit locking strip. Beware though there is always the possibility the glass will break especially if there are nicks and scratches in the glass which there will be if the windscreen is old. You might need the magic tool to fit the locking strip. Rob |
