MG MG Y Type - 16 inch rims

I have just finished my 4 1/2j rims,The centres are out of a YT but the outer rim is a 1949 Rover P3, I drilled out the rivets and pressed the two together, A good tight interference fit, The rivet holes do not line up but a good welder fixed that in seconds,How many other 16 inch old car rims made in the UK came out of the same factory??????

Hi,
I too have a YT that has had wide rims fitted (5"). I don't know their origin. I did read that some standard Vanguards had this size rim but I have no verification of that.

I would be interested to hear your experience in sourcing tyres for the rims (radials). I know Tony S advises that they are pretty rare. Some light commercials seem one option, but even so, I think they are rarely seen in Oz dealers. There are some options around 300~400 dollars per tyre on international sites.
As to the spare, I have also an original wheel/rim, and was wondering about using a "space saver" tyre for this. It would then fit the storage space I think.

Any comments on that idea?

Hi Kevin I have put Federal tyres on the rims . They are 8 ply but the tread pattern look OK. The cost for 4 tyres ,tubes, fitted and balanced was 640 dollars in Brisbane. The spare has not been on my list of jobs yet but I will be looking at spaces savers at the wrecking yard

A bit of a tangent, but did you know that during TC production, 16" x 4" wheels for TCs were available from the MG Factory Service Department? They were M.G. Part No. A.1338. (See image from the MG Factory document published in June 1949.) Later, there were wider 15" x 4.5" wheels for TDs, M.G. Part No. 131904 (listed in the December 1951 document). Pardon my ignorance, as I am mainly a TC guy, but do TD wheels fit Y-Types?

I will scan the 1951 document and post that in a few minutes.

I'm thinking that the TD wheels don't fit Y-Types, so this is just an academic tangent?

Hi Bob,
you are probably right about the wheels.
But wheels I have, it is just the available tyres that are my concern in the near future (given some hoped-for progress on the restoration of the YT, which is at a stand-still now for various reasons)

The lack of readily available 16inch tyres was the decider for special order 15inch wire wheels for our YT back in '91. Bob you might be interested to know that indeed TD wire wheels do not fit a YA/T but Aus built Fords have the same PCD so you can fit GT Falcon 16 slotters, they look cool on a Y!!!!
