MG MG Y Type - 1947 MG Y

I've just brought home a MG Y from Sweeden, and now I'll register it in denmark.

Acording to danish law I can get it licensed in original state in all aspects but one - I have to make the light in the trafficators flash.

How do I do that wich a minimum of changes to the car, as it is in a very original state.

Ole Aaen

Wow- paint work looks good! I wish mine was one tenth as good. Not sure if colour scheme is original though. Is the car known to us?
David Mullen

Hello Ole

Your car looks superb!

It is not possible to make the Trafficators flash. It is easy, and much safer (nobody looks for trafficators now) to fit separate indicators. The indicators can operate alongside the semaphores i.e. both will be operated by the trafficator switch or can be operated separately with a different switch. Instructions are available with the Y Register Information sheets Number 3 or Number 4. See the Regalia section of www.mgytypes.org

If fitting indicators it is preferable to convert the front Lucas 1130 sidelights to dual filament bulbs; new bulb holders are available from most Lucas stockists. (see suppliers on website) Unfortunately you will have to fit indicators to to rear of the car and is is common practice to use Motor Cycle lights mounted on brackets fittid to the bumper supports. This saves drilling holes in the bodywork.

You will also need flasher units but these details together with wiring diagrams are included in the hgelpsheets.

Good luck

I can se it now - if the semaphores should flash, the magnet would flash too.

I have to do it the hard way, and fit indicators.

And David you are right - the colors are not original - but nice! - a bit Cream Cracker inspired, I think.

I've just registred the car on your webside - it is actually quite early - chassisno. 433 - no 182 build.

Ole

If you go to the Regalia page (see Book Review and Regalia) at www.mgytypes.org there are a couple of Datat Sheets that specifically cover this for you that you might want to buy:

Data Sheet 1 - Steering Column Electrics.
So that you know how the slip ring works on the steering column relative to the turn ring on the steering wheel.

Data Sheet 3 - Fitting Flashers.
Covers exactly what it says - how to fit flashing indicators.

Data Sheet 4 - Flashing Indicators with Semaphores.
If you want to operate both modern flashing indicators AND have the old semaphores still work for kicks.

and

Data Sheet 8 - Trafficator Semaphore Arms.
How to maintain you trafficators in good working order.

There is a great deal of valuable information available to you in the publications listed above to achieve what you want in this current respect, and we also cover a host more issues in other publications too. I would strongly suggest that you check out these items.

Hello Ole,
I have modified my trafficators so that they flash. It is not that hard really.

You will need to run an extra wire to each of the trafficators - that's the hard part.

Next you connect the extra wire to the bulb and not the solenoid - I recall you will need to drill an extra hole in the backplate to get the wire in the right place.

Connect power from the slip ring (left and right) to seperate flasher cans - then to the new trafficator wires.

Turn the switch in the centre of the wheel and the arm goes up - then the flashing starts - looks great.

We have a similar law here in Australia - only flashing trafficators are legal. I like trafficators, so had to find a way to make them legal.

I also have extra indicators at the rear on the bumper and dual filament bulbs in the front sidelights, as my car is used as daily transport in the city.

Next time I have the trafficators out I will take detailed photos of my conversion for the website, but it can be done - have a go yourself.
A L SLATTERY

Now we are getting there - how nice.

The thing is, that I like the trafficators as well.

My guess is that you joined the old wires at the bulbs before connecting the new wires comming from the flashers? That way the constant current goes to the solenoid.

I'll get right at it

Ole

Everything is covered in the Data sheets I mentioned - there are even wire diagrams and details of the diodes, flasher units, dash warning lights (that you have flashers activated - also an EU Safety Requirement) that you will need etc. too.

I ordred the sheets yesterday - are they fast shippers?
Ole Aaen

Hi Ole

Yes thanks - I saw your order come in through the website and we are working on shipping that out to you. The regular shipment would be by Royal Mail and DHL or UPS would only get them to you 24 hours quicker but be inordinately expensive. I will ask David Hague to look at options for you though if they havent gone yet and stress the issue for you.

Paul
Paul Barrow

Ordinately by Royal mail is ok.

Poul

I got the sheets yesterday - but you hav'nt read my post properly, they do NOT cower the issue about how you get the trafficators to flash!

So I should have stuck to A L Slattery's suggestion in the first place!
Ole Aaen

Dear Ole, you have YA that has bumper overriders but shouldn't, and I have a YB that does not have them but should. Would you consider selling yours ?
Remo Peter

I might - that depends on how the bumper looks under the overriders - I'll have a look.

Ole
Ole Aaen

From what I can see from the picture the overriders are the wrong type for a YB. The YB used the same overriders as the YT, TC EXU and Ford Prefect. There is a chap, Doug Pelton, who has two TC EXUs and besides is putting together a buisness making and selling parts for TCs that are either impossible to find or are of poor quality from the likes of Moss. He may have the overriders. Check on the T-ABC site for a link. Otherwise check back with me and I will find it.
As for the YA since it did not have them originaly, it doesn't matter, and I would leave them be. Terry

Thanks, Terry, for your clarification.
