MG MG Y Type - 1949 YT for sale in the US

Lovely looking car but for $46.5k (around GB £32K) its a shame that the correct fog lamps are not fitted and that the wheel arches appear to be painted black (underseal?) and not body colour. I'm probably beimg a little pedantic - but if it's a case of getting it right then why not?

Also in only one ownership since the 1950's (though how many before?). With good provenance and the excellent standard of restoration it's probably not a too unreasonable price to seek. It shows that expensive restorations very rarely are a good return for the owner but are worthy for the next owner.

There are some very high prices now being sought for Y's and the £19.5k YA advertised recently on e-bay fetched £17.5k. That too had undergone an expensive though no doubt excellent re-build.

The trouble with rising prices for classic cars is that you can end up with over restored or static museum pieces that are not used and what's the point of a car that is not driven...at the end of the day nothing lasts forever..not even the universe so enjoy the car while you own it and that any damage or wear only adds to the character..there are enough bland T types around without adding bland Y types to the list.

Hum... The wheel wells; while shadowed; appear red on my computer when I look at the large version of the images. Perhaps proper image color is just a Mac thing. Now if the lights were from a period from before the car was designed and built, I would agree. But frankly any light made after the build date of the car, "could" have been added to the car as a period accessory. So in my view that is of little concern so long as the car is not butchered with modifications to add the accessory.

I would have to agree that the price of some of these cars is overly expensive. However; if they are restored to a high standard it is very easy to have more money in the car than the market will bear. High standard does not necessarily mean "correct" for a purist. It simply means that a lot of things have been fixed, restored or replaced to eliminate what is to the untrained eye; "damage."

One mans "damage" is another mans "patina", and visa versa. That places "overly expensive" into the realm of being in the eye of the beholder (or buyer). In my view most running YTs that I have seen should fall into the range of $20K-30K. In part that is why it took me so long to find one (or 2).

There are two perennial YTs for sale on ebay. One from a dealer in California (two tone green) and a second in Denver Colorado (black). Both of these cars have reached bidding values above $30K dollars. In fact the Green one reached $41K in one auction. The owner is holding the green one trying to reach $45K. The Denver car is apparently considered by the owner to be worth something north of $35K as the bids have been that high.

Why do they always put T Series won't show up in search MG YT or MG Y Tourer etc.
R E Knight

I must admit both cars are nice.....

Richard Knight asked the question why do MG Ys feature uncer T Series cars in North America?

This is because in the North America (continent) we use eBay.com not eBay.co.uk. EBay.com has a sub-division for cars called eBaymotors that you have to use when selling cars. EBaymotors although having an MG sub-division, and then a T Series section does not have a Y Series, so T is the nearest we can get to it. You would have to write to EBay and ask them to create a new section ... and they are not that customer responsive in any country they operate in.

A similar situation occurred when they recently withdrew Vintage category - hence why often times modern garbage that is completely unsuitable for use within a 1,000 mile radius of MG Ys shows up as being advocated as acceptable for use on an MG Y.

Hope this explains the position for you better. I monitor TC and TD worldwide any way as many of the parts are interchangable and sellers do not realise that so even in the UK sellers do not list under MG Y/YT or YB as an application.
