MG MG Y Type - 1950 MG Y VIN location

Hi.

Where would I find the VIN on a 1950 MG Y?
J.R. Roe

Hi JR

There are two places where you should be able to find the VIN number for your Y. Back in the day before they were known as VIN numbers they were called CAR numbers or CHASSIS numbers.

On the Y the first place is on the factory guarantee plate - see the top photo in the picture attached below. Below the Car number on the guarantee plate should be the engine number. This plate should be on the left hand side of the battery box. However it is easy, if you have access to other plates, for this to be switched, or transferred over if the car body has been switched from another car.

The second place you will find it is covered in the lower 3 photos in the picture. This is on the front outside edge of the left chassis leg. Often this has been covered over by underseal and may need careful excavating as it will be stamped in. Rough excavating may tend to erase the number if you are not careful. The number is located just forward of the hole for the steering arm but as it was manually stamped in the number may be anywhere in that general area. It may even be upside down! Clearly this OUGHT to be the same as on the guarantee plate!

When you find your car's number please register your car with us at www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/registeryoury.shtml and send me a picture of it if you would.

If you need further assistance please email me on the address above.

Attached are the numbers on my TD. Highlighted in yellow chalk.
Yours should be similar.

The preceding letters should be included in the chassis number.
When doing a title search I found an MGTD with the same number less the preceding TD.
I would guess the engine number was used for titling. This was common in the early days of titling, since these cars preceded VIN numbers.

Thanks for the info. I found the plate and attached is a picture. I then found the registration from 2011 and lists the VIN as 14706, I do see that on the plate so should use that number or Y/4932?

J.R. Roe

JR, Y/4932 is your Vin Number and SC/14706 is your engine number. The MGCC would would appreciate it if you would register your Y on line with us, the form can be found at

Morning JR from WA just up I5 from you.

State Patrol frequently have our cars incorrectly identified by the Engine number rather than the chassis or car number! I have been able to assist owners several times getting this corrected so please drop me a line off BBS and I will help you get State Patrol and the CA DMV get this corrected. Alternately you can include your request on the notes fields on our on-line Registration Form at www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/registeryoury.shtml with the International MG Y Type Register.

Look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience and we will start working on this together.

Best wishes

Paul
