MG MG Y Type - 1953 YB on eBay - St. Louis, MO

Hi, all - not into YB's myself, but this looks like a complete car. I surely didn't know that the steering wheel was adjustable, though. Good pictures, if nothing else.

Cheers - - Alec

Sorry about that - here's the url:

It is reasonably complete but its a heck of a price tag for the condition I think, especially if you will need to get it delivered.
Paul Barrow

Hi, Paul - after a bit of research, I see that the price is a bit high. The seller is a broker, and not the real owner - and they get 25% commission, plus all the fees that eBay charges, so the owner is only going to realize less than $6000 from the sale.

If I were interested, I'd search the archives of the newspapers in the St. Louis area, or contact the local car clubs and try to chase down the true owner.

Thanks for your insight - - Alec

PS: I wonder how many old autos have the key thrown over the fence, and "lost", so there can be no question about how the car actually runs? <grin>

It does have the correct wiperblades, twin carburettors, winscreen washer(bottle) and is that a brake booster?
Willem van der Veer

I believe it is some servo unit Willem, andAlec, 25% of no sale because the price is too high, is the same as 100% of no sale - LOL!

Yes - correct blades but no pegs!

I thought the YT was the only T-type that had dual carbs?
Mark Weissman

It was as OE (Original Equipment) but this has been fairly heavily modified (brake servo etc - which if the brakes are properly set up is completely unnecessary on this car - probably doesnt even come up to 54 bhp with the twin carbs as it has a different cam to the YT!).

It's not far from where we live. Definitely a beauty, but 0-60 in 30+ seconds???

We were half-tempted to go take a look at it...

TheMiz

I too must confess little in-depth knowledge of YAs and YB's but I believe the YB was produced as the TF was being introduced, hence a lot of common bits like the telescopic steering column, and the 1½" SUs and the octagonal instruments. In fact, I believe they were both assembled on the same production line.

I think too, this is probably quite a good car that obviously has to be restored, but is over-priced at $7,500. That's definitely a brake servo on there!. Also the front bumper doesn't look original.

What I think is unusual is the combination of a factory heater, crank-out windscreen and trafficators. The sunroof is especially interesting as many dealers fitted Webasto (folding fabric) sunroofs and not the metal one fitted in the pictures, so this is almost certainly a factory-fitted metal sunroof, making it quite rare.

In top shape, it would likely be quite desirable.

I would love to see Neil Cairns comments.

All Y-Types had crank-out windscreens, metal sunroofs and trafficators unless I'm mistaken. But I was also under the assumption that the factory did not install dual-carbs on YA and YB, only YT.

The TF was introduced in 1953, the same year the Y-Type was discontinued. Therefore the YB shared it's components with the TD. However I have no doubt that many parts on a YB are interchangable with a TF since MG (and most British car companies of the period) passed along so many older parts to new models.
Steve Simmons

Steve is absolutely correct - only the YT had production 2 carbs fitted. The Smiths heater is a standard after market feature, the crank-out screen and trafficators ARE standard, however it looks as if some attempt has been made to fit flashers (see rear wings, and steering column for stalk control). The parking light (roof, red & white) is also non-standard after market of the period, and was common on many British cars in the UK due to fog.

In top shape would be desirable, however, having restored a YA upholstery that alone will be nearly $2,000 - $2,500, plus a full bare metal re-spray, it could benefit from a full re-wire and new loom, etc and that is just from looking at the pictures.

Originally on eBay at just shy of $10k it is still about 70% over-priced for all of the work that will need to be done to it before I even hear the engine & gearbox in my opinion. Plus of course there would be collection transport, so deep pockets are necessary.
