MG MG Y Type - 65th Y Type Anniversary at Abingdon 25 March

The M.G.Car Club Y Type Register is celebrating the 65th Anniversary of the launch of the model with a number of events throughout 2012.

The first of these will be held in ABINGDON MARKET PLACE on SUNDAY 25th MARCH 2012 from 2.00 p.m.

Abingdon is of course the spiritual home of M.G. and thanks to the efforts of the MGCC and the Abingdon Town Council the Y Type Register have been given permission to display examples of the marque on SUNDAY 25 MARCH 2012 from 2.00 pm onwards and all Y owners are welcome.

This date is the nearest that we could get to the official launch in 1947, which I believe was 16th March, though no doubt someone will correct me on that!

If you are interested in attending this unique event, which is probably the first of many celebrations worldwide, then please do let me know. There is no entry fee. Please phone me on 01926 424053 and/or E-mail me: jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com

This event is one of several that the Y Type Register are arranging over 2012. Others include - THE SPRING RUN & WEEKEND on May 12/13, M.G.LIVE at Silverstone over June 23/24, the 20th Anniversary of the Y Type Register Run to Brittany September 9/14, the Autumn Run September (date TBC) and the National Classic Car Show at the NEc in November 2012

I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing some of you at Abingdon and of course some of the other events that the MGCC Y Type Register is organsing during 2012.

All the best

I tried to add the RIPON CLASSIC CAR GATHERING on 29 July where ANDREW COULSON has for many years raised the flag for the Y Types and the Y type Register. However, my time ran out to include this important event in the North of England. Thank you to both Andrew and Arlene for their sterling work. Very well done.

All the best

Dear All

This is just a reminder about the 65th Anniversary Event in the Market Square at Abingdon on Sunday 25th March at 200pm.

I am pleased to note that since the March issue of Safety Fast came out I have had a few more committments which is great news.

As I have mentioned before this event is open to ALL Y Type owners and there is absolutely no need to be members of the MGCC.

There is space for up to 40 cars in the Market Square and whilst I would be staggered if we reached that total it would be brilliant to see 20+. It's an opportunity to maybe meet former employees of the MG Factory who may attend and I aware that the Abingdon Works Centre are promoting this through Chris and Annette Callaghan. So who knows it might be that you could have the chance of talking to someone who may have worked on the line when these cars were produced.
Though they would be in the early 80's!

Look forward to seeing you and once more if you can phone (01926 424053) or e-mail me (jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com) it would be handy. I am aware of course that for some of you it maybe a last minute decision depending on the weather. You can alsways contact me on 07855566325 to confirm that you are coming or just send me a text.

Let's try and make it a successful starting point for the 65th Anniversary.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely

Jerry

Dear All

I am pleased to note that Classic Car Weekly will be covering this event which is open to all Y Type owners.

It would be great to see a good few examples of the marque present and of course an ideal opportunity for anyone who maybe considering acquiring a Y to talk to owners.

I look forward to seeing you.

Sincerely

Jerry

Dear All

An enjoyable afternoon was held in Abingdon Market Square today (25th March) with fantastic weather to bring the crowds out.

Around 12-13 cars present I cant remember exactly as I didn't count them - far too busy nattering.

James Taylor from Classc Car Weekly was present so hopefully there may be some coverage in the national motoring press.

Details and pics will be posted in due course along with some video clips, thanks to Ted Gardner, on the Y Register website - www.mgccyregister.com.

Peter Veilvoye's new YA, well new to him!, drew a lot of interest from fellow Y owners and I understand was Peter's first major run in the car. His next significant job on the car is a re-trim which he has arranged. We look forward to seeing the outcome.

Thanks to Peter for arranging the banner celebrating 65 Years of the Y Type.

A lot of interest from the public and a couple of ex works employees present.

Thanks to all who attended with especial thanks to Chris and Annette Callaghan, together with Abingdon Works Centre and Chris Seaward from MGCC for arranging access to the Square.

When the pictures are posted take a look at the Town Hall which provides a stunning backdrop to the Square. On the first floor facing the square are 4 windows. The second window from the left is like the rest divided into three sections, each defined by stone mullions. The middle window (between the mullions) was taken out when MGCC lifted an MGB body through the opening (sans wheels and windscreen) to enable it to be part of an MG exhibition within the museum. It doesn't look possible - but it was! I believe there are details in Safety Fast and on You Tube? The car was rebuilt once inside.

Great to see the start of the UK Y Type Season marked by fine weather and some very interested crowds.
