MG MG Y Type - 70th Anniversary Y-Type Rally - Australia 2017

The Australian celebration of 70 years of the Y-Type will be held on the 9th - 12th June 2017 in Maleny Queensland - "70 flat out FUN!".

The rally will include a variety of events to suit Y-Types and their owners, touring the roads of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, as well as social gatherings and technical seminars.

The rally will be based at the Tranquil Park Resort in Maleny (http://www.tranquilpark.com.au), and will be limited to around 50 cars and 100 people (the resort capacity). We already have expressions of interest from over 70 people to attend the event at present, so we expect the event may be over subscribed.

If you wish to attend this event, please contact the Resort as soon as possible to secure a room with a small deposit. I have booked my room already !. The accommodation is only $65/person/night - very reasonable.

The Rally Registration Fee (including all meals/drinks) will be announced in January 2017.

We have already received considerable interest from Overseas Y-Type Enthusiasts keen to participate, so this will be an exceptional opportunity to meet with many International Y-Typers and their cars.

If you would like further details on the rally program or questions, please email me at:- mgyregister@optusnet.com.au

To book your accommodation, contact Tranquil Park Resort direct by email:- reception@tranquilpark.com.au or FREECALL 1800 060 679

Pre-Registration forms are now available for this event via the events page on the International MG Y-Type Register Website.

For Australian Y-Type owners, this is an event not to be missed, but you will need to act early as the event is capped by the venue size.

We will also assist any overseas owners who might venture here for the rally.

Get your pre-registration done first, and then book the accommodation - rooms are limited.

Event registration will be open in January 2017 and close when fully subscribed or by 31st March 2017.

The Tentative Event Programme is also available on the events page. See you there !.

Tony, as you mention Garage visits in the program, I take it your residence is on the list.

For those who haven't been to Tony's, here are a couple of photos. He has already mentioned about his collection of doors in another thread.

All the forms are now available on the Events Page at www.mgytypes.org.

If you find you cannot COMPLETE the form, check to see if your browser is set to support the completion of FORMS!! It would appear that many recent updates to Firefox and Internet Explorer/Microsoft Edge are disabling this by default for some wonderful reason best known to themselves! Please ensure that you have a copy of at least Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, that it is up to date, and that your browser is set up to use it in the Applications settings!

Thanks Paul for your help in spreading the word - much appreciated.

There is a flurry of restorations happening in Australia leading up to the 70th, so there will be lots of "new" cars to see. There is a video on the rally facebook page of a 1st time engine start & gearbox test - have a look, I think it's cool.

See you in 2017, for "70 flat out FUN" !.

Pleased to say we have our first "event sponsor" on board, and they are covering the cost of the Jazz Singer & band for the 70th Anniversary Dinner.

Check out the event Facebook page for a video of the singer !. Very classy !.

See you in 2017, for "70 flat out FUN" !.

With thanks to Steve & Lynne Brompton, the special rally plates are ready !. These are only available to the first 50 Y-Types that register to the event - there are no spares & they are not available any other way. Ensure your car has a bracket to carry your rally plate during the weekend. Registrations will open in February 2017 - get ready !.........

A L SLATTERY

Hi Tony,

Why don't you have some more rally plates printed? I wouldn't mind paying for one to display on the Y-type this year.

(or if you are lucky 'only' 47 Y-types will attend and you'll have a spare to sell to me?)
Willem van der Veer

Hello Willem,
I do have a couple of spare plates, but I would really like to keep them for Y-Typers attending the rally.

You could of course come to the rally yourself, and use one of our local Y's, and take home the rally plate. Howzat for an offer ?.

I'd rather not get more plates made as I really have a lot of other tasks to organise the event in June.

Cheers

We are pleased to confirm that both Dave Lawrence - author of "Let There be Y's" and Paul Barrow - webmaster of "The International Y-Type Register" website will be here in Australia for the 70th Weekend. This will be your only chance to meet these two "guru's" of Y-Types on the same weekend in Australia. The weekend schedule is being refined now, and you will have plenty of chances to meet and talk with these distinguished gentlemen, and they are really looking forward to seeing your Y-Types too !.
A L SLATTERY

Only 7 weeks to go now - or 49 days. Looking forward to attending the biggest Y Type event celebrating the 70th Birthday of the Y Type with everyone down in Australia!

Fun times ahead!

We will be conducting a Sealed Bid Auction at the 70th Anniversary Weekend as we have had two new YA/YB Dashboards donated to raise funds to offset costs of running the event.

Have a look at the photos - they are fantastic.

You can bid on these if you are at the rally or via the FB page.

A L SLATTERY

Some of the locals are starting to fit their 70th Anniversary Plates.

There are a small number of plates available that you will be able to acquire via a sealed bid auction (plus postage) - just watch our FB page for details.

There is also a remarkable collection of hard to find Y-Type parts up for grabs too in the auction - all original parts.

How about a pair of 8" headlamps and matching fog amp and stop lamp to suit a YA Saloon ?.
A L SLATTERY

Frank has his 1947 wardrobe sorted as well as his 70th plates !. Only 17 days to go - 35 Y-Types & over 70 keen enthusiasts for 3 days - Flat Out Fun.......

Here is the rally plate "full set" as mentioned by Bob Simpson earlier in this thread.

To Tony Slattery: Can't wait for this weekend! - beautiful Queensland winter weather, a whole bunch of fellow enthus-Y-asts, and some beautiful Y Types to look at. It doesn't get any better than that. Look forward to meeting everyone, and celebrating our beloved Ys.
Yours, John.
J P Hall

Really looking forward to today and privileged to be attending this event this year. Drive safely folks and see you in a few hours time.
Paul Barrow

Hi Guys

I arrived at the mechanics this morning to see another Y being worked on. (unfortunately neither Y was next to the other, so sorry no photo.) A small mechanical knock which couldn't be replicated by the mechanics. Having driven from Coffs Harbour yesterday, they continued north after lunch.

My repaired Generator and Regulator arrived back at the mechanics this morning and I finally got my YT registered at lunch time today.

So my YT's first try run will be the 175km run tomorrow morning up the M1 to the 70th Y Anniversary weekend at Nambour. I hope all goes well.

Carbies are sucking in air around the shafts, so no idling of the motor.

Sell you fellow MG enthus-Y-asts for lunch on Saturday.

Stuart

I'm looking forwards to the event report and seeing the Ys in photos.
Have lots of fun down under.

Having an absolutely fantastic time celebrating the truly International MG Y Type 70th birthday event here in Queensland Australia with all our Australian brothers and sisters in MG Y Types. Represented here are South Africa, New Zealand, UK and USA as well as many states of this great Country.

A very special thanks go out to Tony and Debbie Slattery who have worked so hard for so long to create a wonderful event.

Thank you Australia and Happy MG Y Typeing to all in this 70th Anniversary Year.

Paul Barrow

RK and others, here is the line up of the 33 Ys attending the weekend.

Unfortunately my YT only made 30km up the motorway before I had steam coming out of the hood and coolant all over the engine bay. Car was transported (on a tilt-tray) back to my shed and I pulled out my 72 VW Beetle out and drove that up here.

Stuart

Stuart Duncan

Stuart,

Nice touch, nice to re-enact your past big event of nice Y line up.

Look forwards to reports of rest of flat out fun.
Enjoy the event, even if the YT let you down, I can say I've had same when my YT boiled up in France and Germany, needed new head gasket and cylinder head skimmed due to issues.

Tony/Paul/Dave,

Been following the photos on the Facebook page of 33 Y Types down under. Fantastic turn out and quite amazing to think how the cars exported from here in UK are still looking in such fantastic condition. I wonder how many YT's were re-imported from Oz back to UK, if still in Oz could have made record number of Y's at one event.

At the end of a truly International MG Y Type Register event we took a photograph of the Four International Representative in front of a 1947 MG YA belonging to Tony Slattery.

Seen here are David Lawrence - South Africa (top left), Tony Slattery - East Coast Australia (top right), Tony Bushell - New Zealand (bottom right) and Paul Barrow (bottom left) Western USA.

Thanks to all who came, and it sounds like the 75th anniversary is already being planned!

Paul

There are lots of photos from our 70th Weekend on our Facebook page.

We are also looking at putting together a CD of some 500 photos taken by the official event photographer. These will be available at near cost price. We will include a digital copy of the 70th Event Handbook, detailing all the cars & people who attended this lovelY event.

There will certainly be a 75th Anniversary Weekend in 2022, so start getting your Y ready for more "FUN in the Sun".

A big thank you to all those who came - one YT was driven more than 2,130km (1,330 Miles) to the event. Now that is a long drive - but what an adventure !.

Attached is a photo of YA4086, which was voted by the participants as the YA they would most like to take home !. I will post a photo of the most desirable YT later.

Safe Travels home to all the lovely people we have met this weekend for the first time, and old friends too.

It was simply "70 Flat out FUN"

Nice example too - many very correct features.

We had 33 MG Y cars at the event with only one who was unable to make it 34 to the start line ... so he came in a VW Beetle/Bug.

William Revit

Hello Willy,
Yes, Andrew & Kathy were at the 70th in Maud. Andrew has just finished the restoration & the car is magnificent. I will pass on your request for contact to him.

We did have one couple from Tasmania at the Welcome Dinner, as they were passing through on their holidays. You likely have them to thank for the sticker. We have a few left over if anyone else is interested.

There are quite a few "Hubcap Puzzles" to come !.

But in the meantime, a few YT's all in a line at the farewell BBQ at The Classic Workshop, Black Mountain. Chassis numbers anyone ?.

Cheers

Tony

A L SLATTERY

A nice number of YT's photographed there in a row Tony.

I wonder what is the largest number of a gathering of YT's in one single place?

My local owners club have 4 YT's owned by members.

I've seen over the years a few more turning up at the UK Spring Run's which when you think how few were retained in the UK at the time of export is quite some thing to achieve.

Richard
R E Knight

Tony,

Did I count right from your photo on Facebook, with my total of 11 YT's at the front of the photo on the Y line up? You must be proud of the achievement, larger country and you get members to all pull together for a big event, well done.
The UK is a fraction of the size and I've heard owners complain that past Spring Runs have been too far North or too far South, just drive em, and enjoy them I say, what's distance provided you have the time.
Richard
R E Knight

Yes, there were 11 YT's in the big Y. We had 12 coming to the 70th, but one failed to arrive after dropping an expansion plug from the side of the block en-route.

We has 22 YA's there.

At last count there have been 19 known YT's exported from Australia in the last 25 years. Most have gone to the UK.

One YT has just arrived home - it covered 4,349km in it's trip, including quite a number of "side trips".

There really is no excuse not to drive your Y-Type - well I will concede that traffic congestion can be a downer, but we are blessed in our part of the world in that regard where the 70th was held.

I will email you a PDF copy of the event handbook in a few days that includes all the cars & the results if you would like a copy.

Once Paul returns, he will likely add it to the website so it is available for everyone - whether you were there or not.

Cheers

Tony

Which Y in which Y's hubcap do we have here?

If you check out the "Picture of the Month" you will see one little moment in time that made the 70th even more special & International !.

There are over 500 images from the weekend from which you can print your own favourites, as well as a copy of the Event Handbook listing all the cars & owners, and the "official" Event Report.

Send your order to mgyregister(at)optusnet(dot)com(dot)au Once we have your CD, you will be sent a PayPal invoice including postage.

To everyone who attended our 70th Weekend - is anyone missing a compact camera ?.

One has been found in a car that was at the event, but it does not belong to the car owner.

You will need to name the make & model of camera to reclaim it.

If we can't find the owner this way, the next step is to download the photos and see if we can find the owner that way ?.

Cheers
