Thanks Matthew, you got the ball rolling so let's start a collective effort to get all these answered.I have much work to do for a time to come so I should learn and know the answers to these questions. See if I can answer the first one , 1. 1940. at the London Motor Show 🍺 |

2= Alec Issigonis' work notes for that period do not mention any work on the Y type.
3= Alec Issigonis. Also Morris Minor and Morris Mini/Austin Seven. 9= 7432 excluding the YT. 10= 66.5mm, 90mm. 11= You probably mean Gerald Palmer, but in his autobiography he says the Y type design was well advanced when he took over. Also ZA Magnette. 19= First YB 0251 had engine installed in November 1951. 20= 1939. Thinking about the others. Could also try; What other Morris or MG had a rear panhard rod, and who was responsible for using it on the Y type (slightly unfair question). Also; Who designed the front anti-roll bar used in the YB. |
R A WILSON |
Should have said for 2, David Lawrence implies two, but not mentioned by Issigonis. |

Ha-ha - no one is willing to risk it and answer them all? and you all have access to the IMGYTR website, and Let there be Ys etc.!! All those who were at the dinner had to attempt them all :)!! Paul |
Paul Barrow |
Going to those links, Paul, means you need to be internet savvy. I'm still in the quill & ink era. Here's a question (and the answer) Which classic MG is not depicted on my shirt? Sad to say, the Y Type. But you've got to check out the buttons.

Ahh forgot to thank Paul for the questions. Cheers Jerry |

Puzzled by 9; the last Y was 7285, then deduct 250 as counting started at 251, then deduct 904 for the YT, leaves 6131. The last YB was 1551, then deduct 250 as counting started at 251, leaves 1301. Thus Y + YB = 7432. For 11; Gerald Palmer states in his autobiography "I did not design the YA body; this had been done in the Morris drawing office as an extension of Leslie Hall's design for the Morris Eight saloon". |
R A WILSON |
Dont thank me Jerry - the quiz was set by Bob & Tricia Simpson. |

My figure for Q9 came from Anders Clausager's book om MG Saloons. He has an excellent summary of Y sales and destinations and sets out total Ys built by type YA YB & YT. The YT figures are the often quoted 877 but the 'accepted' figure is now 904.
The production figures for YAs is thus: RHD Home 3147 RHD Export 2304 LHD Export 311 LHD Export 15 North American export Chassis RHD 9 CKD RHD 372 Making a Total 6158 So 6158 《YA》+ 1301 《YB》 = 7459 The info is on p181 of MG Saloon Cars (from the 1920's to the 1970's) by Anders Ditlev Clausager and published in 1998. Hope that helps clarify thd picture a little! Cheers Jerry |

Thank you for the explanation of Y type numbers, but my data comes from the original production records. They show that the last Y type was 7285, fitted with engine XPAG/SC2/17106 on the 19th Nov 1951. Difficult to know where the extra 27 cars came from. |
R A WILSON |
The 39 YB's exported to Australia, are they listed in production records as Australia bound, or some other source? Matthew. |
M Magilton |
The production records only show the number of the engine fitted to each car, and if the engine was changed later, normally giving a date, but rarely the replacement engine number. Occasionally there are comments such as 'chassis only' or 'IDK' (?) or Development or Experimental. For the TD the records also show if the car was 'Home' or EXU or EXL or EXR, and for the TF they show the 'Spec'. The production records do not show the actual destination of each car - I can only assume there were separate sales records; if so I have not seen them. |
R A WILSON |
The IMGYTR have certain other records specific to the import of our cars to Australia. |
Paul Barrow |
I would be interested to know which records they are Paul. |
M Magilton |
If you check out the "Picture of the Month" you will see one little moment in time that made the 70th even more special & International !. |
