MG MG Y Type - A good coil?
There is a way you can check whether a coil is a good one (windings etc.) or not using an Ohmmeter but for the life of me I cannot remember how to do it. I have a couple of original coils and I want to see if any of them are any good. Can someone remind me how to do it please? Thanks Paul |

With all wires disconnedted from the coil, measure the resistance between the two side terminals with an ohmeter. The reading should be in the range of 0.75-0.81 ohm. Test from either side terminal to the center high voltage terminal, and the reading should be 10,000-11,000 ohms. Any significant difference would suggest replacing the coil. |

Thanks Bro' - my multimeter isnt that fancy, but it essentially shows 0 ohms across the two terminals and 4-5k ohms HT (High Tension) to SW (Ignition switch) side terminal. It is an original coil so would this be a fair reading - it doesnt have to produce a spark that could illumin the East Coast when it lights up? :-) Paul |

Paul, I think you need to borrow a digital meter from someone. Scott |

Hey Scott, bring yours when you come to stay next! Come soon! Paul |

Paul, I don't think they would let me on the plane with one! Scott |

I'll bring a meter when I come to Bellingham. |

Thanks Rob. Scott - put it in your hold luggage :-) Where there's a will ... |
