MG MG Y Type - Air cleaner

Can anybody tell me why we need to put engine oil in the air cleaner and what the consequences of having a dry air cleaner would be? Many thanks. Andrew

It captures and traps the dirt for one thing, and for another acts like I silencer - at least that is what I have been led to believe. I might be wrong!

Oil bath air cleaners were the standard technology pre WW-II. Running without oil will result in a total lack of filtering the incoming air. If you don't want to go with the oil bath check the archives as I think there is a very old thread that lists a NAPA paper filter that will fit the air cleaner housing.

The 'oil-bath air cleaner' is an export-only item. UK cars had a simple air silencer. The air is turned through 180 degrees over the oil to capitulate any dirt into the oil and supposedly clean air then goes into the carb. Engine oil is used as it is the easiest to obtain.

So, if mine is a UK car presumably I don't need to put any oil in there? My workshop manual (which is for the later YB) doesn't seem to mention that there are two types, and nor does it seem to properly explain how to add the oil for those that need it. I want to make sure that it is okay before I embark on the Spring Run!!

Send me a photo of your air cleaner and also a scan of the page from your manual. I have looked in my YB Operation Manual and it only shows the UK type being dipped in parafin to clean it. It then recommeds the same treatment for cleaning the oil filter. Same with my YA manuals (of which I have several). They then refer to dipping the meshed part in oil and standing to drain off. Same is in the YA Workshop Manual

I will be interested to see what your manual says to compare as I dont have a YB Workshop Manual. Neil makes mention of the oil bath type fitted to export. Are you possibly confusing an oil bath type with an oil impregnated mesh? One sits in a bath of oil and the other just gets dunked in it?

Send me as asked and I'll debunk it for you.
