MG MG Y Type - ASHTRAY FITTED TO REAR OF PASSENGER SEAT

Dear All

When I acquired my YT one of the missing items was an ashtray that fits to the rear of the driver and passenger seats. The other one was ok and uses a knurled chrome finished knob. I will post some pics in due course.

After having the seats recovered the trimmer had not included the space for the ashtray. When I asked him why - he responded by asking whether I smoked, which I dont. It rather missed the point!

Anyhow I now have two excellently covered seats sans ashtray fitting. So rather than getting the fitting put in place I have decided not too worry and not bother about including ash trays. So I have one for sale. I'll probably put in on e-bay as I have no idea what the value is.

However, if someone is genuinely missing an ashtray then please let me know and we may come to some arrangement. You can contact me on jerrybirkbeck@btinternet.com. Although it is difficult to prevent the last thing I want to see is some freeloader acquiring the ashtray and then flogging it on e-bay.

Sincerely

Jerry

My grandson, a college student recently returned from a tour in Afghanistan, is restoring his 53 YB with my help, and we are missing both rear ashtrays, so we would definitely have an interest. Thanks.

Good Morning Jerry

Some months ago I recollect seeing a discussion re ashtrays for back seats on Y-Types - I think it was on this board. Someone was thinking of having them made specially, I believe he was in Australia. Whether anything ever came of it I don't know, but You may find that the going rate for an original ones is an almost unbelievable £60 each.

I do remember checking the 2 YB seats that I then owned mor in hope than anticipattion but mine were missing too! If you look back I am pretty sure you will find details.

Do you remember coming over to Fillongley in your TA back in the Summer to have a look at my semi dismanled XPAG engine? I sold it last week to someone who came over from France to pick it up. I still appreciate your having taken the time and trouble to give me your advice.

I am still a very pronounced shade of green having seen your beautiful TA. One can only dream.

Thanks for your note Clive - very pleased to hear you sold the engine.

As the weather was sunny this afternoon I took the opportunity to drive through the Warwwickshire countryside in the TA to watch a rugby match in Shirley. Great fun, although one forgets just how bright the sun can be. Wearing shades is a prerequisite especially when you have no visors!

The journey back in fading light was really enjoyable - the TA with its XPAW engine (bored out to 1350cc)is a joy to drive, very precise on the road, providing one takes the correct line, and in my case having the benefit of a VW steering box (a heresey you might say) and linked to a 5 gear box! The extra gear makes such a difference.

Much as I enjoy the YT where the experience is far more sophisticated but I am always searching for 5th. The TA has a rawness with its bumpy ride but you need to drive it!

My philosophy with old motors is to try and use them throughout the year. 50+ miles today was far, far better than the same journey in my eurobox!

I'll meet up with you in the summer.

Sincerely

Jerry

Hello Jerry

I entirely agree with you about old motors. I used to work for Alvis and we owned a couple of Alvises from the 1920s or very early 30s, one of which was the road racing front wheel drive model Supercharged, with the gearbox in front of the engine and the drive taken to the front wheels sideways somehow or other. Rumour had it that they used to teach the apprentices to drive in it once! How I wanted to get my hands on it. Last time I saw it it was in Coventry Museum of Road Transport.

I once did get a ride in a Scorpion tank on the test track - utterly unbelievable.

Look forward to seeing you in better weather. A friend and his wife are in one of the Triumph clubs meeting at the Bull & Butcher at Corley Mooron the first Tuesday of every month and I generally go. Some nice motors there but the appearance of a TA would certainly get some interest.

We have diverted somewhat from your ashtray. Hope it goes to a good home.

Jerry, UHK 111 is missing an ashtray so I would happily buy yours from you for market rate. PM me if interested. Thanks. Marc
