MG MG Y Type - Aviemore European Event of the Year 2013

Have any Y Types entered this event do you know? Would have been good opportunity for strong Y Type showing being on the UK Shores, but having seen the forecast glad my Euro tour this year was Sommertreff glorious sunshine as this weekend is rather wet.

If you have a look at the list of entrants, it would indicate that Jerry and Jo Birkbeck are currently enjoying the delights of Scotland. Unless of course they have pulled out or not made it?

Two Y Types, oh well I do not feel so bad I could not make it now.
Cheers for info.

Hello from the European Event of the year after today's run the car has completed 915 miles. In Scotland I have had to adjust the clutch rod and the end broke of the throttle spring. Other than that the car has run fine.
Jerry B YT is also running fine

Time for service grease all essential parts prior to return journey.

I was initially intending to go back when event was first advertised, but when I saw price, lack of enthusiasm for event by car clubs own register in organising a support event in run up to Scotland I opted for Sommertreff instead.
Chris, now your on bbs I recall you were taking over web admin of MGCC Y Site, recall announced back in Spring, when you taking over?

Chris, still wondering how Spring Run 2013 went, see there was one photo and brief bbs, but absent of usual report on international Y site where event promoted, are Y community getting report soon? May next years event be held further up North? Seem recall Hampshire got mention, convenient location for southern based owners, biased to Y owners up north who expected make longer journey put in effort.

Dear All

Jo and I were rather concerned about the weather but remarkably it remained fine for not only the whole event but on our journey up on the 11th and return yesterday (23rd).

It did appear a costly event but the organisation was absolutely brilliant. We both felt that we had never been to such a wonderfully well managed event whatever the activity.

To put the costs in perspective - the hotels on the Macdonald Complex was £600 for the two of us. This included 4 nights, bed, breakfast, evening meals drinks on the table (6 bottles to a table of 10), and entertainment. The Caledonian Centre charged £250 for their entry fee - this included an excellent goody bag (with a tartan travel rug, commemorative glasses, etc, etc)) a personalised rally board and a well prepared route book. It also included entry passes for Cawdor Castle, arranged parking at Nairn for the Highland Games and passes for Fort George on the Moray Firth. That was Day 1 and covered around 100 miles on largely remote and wonderful roads.
The Saturday evening was a dinner for 750 held in the conference centre on the site, this followed a welcome buffet on the day of arrival.
Day 2 was at rip to Loch Ness, with parking arranged and overseen by the volunteers from the Caledonian Centre, a 1 hour boat trip on Loch Ness, another vsist to a castle, a return through Inverness and return back to base. About 110 miles. Evening meal at a restaurant of your choice on the site. The Monday was a trip to a distillery (and distilleries and shortbread factory if so wished!) Another great day and a trip of around 100 miles. The final day was a farewell buffet in Dunblane about 100 miles south of the centre. This was a finger buffet between noon and 2.30). Unfortunately, it showed the greedy nature of some of the guests with the Hotel stupidly putting everything out at 12! This was unfortunate but the organisers could not be blamed as human greed sadly took the forefront,

We then stayed in Dunfermline at a B and B and then with friends Brian and Rosie Rainboe (TA) and Terry and Betty Baulch (TD) had a superb journey across the borders to Kendal where we stayed. WE all departed home from Kendal on the Thursday morning with Brian and Terry off to Warwickshire and Northamptonshire respectively whilst we meandered down to see friends near Barnsley,

All was going well and we had by this time travelled over 1300 miles when passing beyond Keighley I noted that the engine was missing slightly. So I changed the plugs and the rotor arm (electronic ignition is fitted to the YT) and we progressed through Huddersfield and the temperature gauge started rising as we were caught in heavy traffic outside Huddersfield. A half hour stop allowed the traffic to thin out and the temperature to drop. I added some water and we made our way oom. We added more water at a filling ststion about four miles from where we were staying and limped in about 6.30.

After the engine had cooled down I checked the water and oil and found water on the dipstick indicating a defect in the cylinder head gasket, I did have a used spare but decided that contacting the insurance company and being trailered back for the last 100 miles was a safer option,

Very frustrating as the little car had been faultless over the whole week and from the Saturday onwards we had run topless (car not us!).

So an absolutely superb event attended by 375 cars and over 750 drivers and passengers from not only the UK but also the US, NZ and Oz. A lot of MGB's and F's but the oldest cars were two 1929 18/80's, T Types prominent and of course Chris's YB and our YT. Many of those whom we chatted to to did not know what a YT was so it offered the opportunity for furthering the awareness of the Y.

So Richard you missed a quite brilliant event which when you tot up everything was good value for money!
Hats off to the Caledonian Centre for superb organisation, selecting routes through stunning and remote countryside, great places to visit along roads which in the main were designed for our type of cars!

Hi Richard

Reading through your comments on the Spring Run for 2014 and your suggestion of holding it further north.
Chris has arranged Hampshire and the New Forest for 2014,

We did of course hold the Spring Run in 2011 in the Peak District but this was poorly attended by our friends from the north apart from our regulars - Andrew, Bill and Chris.

However, I think that Chris and Annette are looking to arranging 2015 around the north midlands area. More info will be forthcoming on this in the future.

All the best

Jerry, sounds like you had good time. Thanks for report, good to hear about different views of events. Still seems shame only 2 Ys could attend the event when based in UK. Concur that the areas you speak about are lovely for any classic, one day I may drive it on route to my in laws.
when will details of 2014 Spring run be published? One thing for sure its travelling distance for handful owners who could attend without overnight stay, good for cost suppose.

Here's a pic at our collection point a couple of weeks ago. Shame but makes you appreciate the quality of a good insurance company. I use Hagerty and phoned through on the Friday morning explaining the problem and the need for collection. No quibble and with us in an hour, Excellent service.

All the best

Jerry
