MG MG Y Type - Batteries

To save re-inventing the wheel (or perhaps because I'm lazy) can anyone recommend a good battery to fit the YB battery box?

I use Optima, gel batteries in everything I can.

One thing with the Y Type battery box you can get pretty much any round terminal battery in.
I have a full size lorry one on one of mine.

Westco Gel Cell or Optima 75/35. The Westco is smaller and lighter. Both are completely sealed and maintenance-free.

I need some advice on batteries, a suitable dimensioned size to fit the box come in two outputs, either 350 amp [expensive] or 250 amps. My question is would 350 amps damage the starter motor?
Bryan

Its only a lightweight XPAG engine and under normal circumstances any battery for a BMC/BL Mini will both fit and work well for you.

It doesn't matter what the amp rating is, so long as it's a 12-volt battery. The amp rating is merely how much current the battery has available for the car to use, not how much it will force out. Too much will make no difference but too little will result in slow starting and possible long-term damage.
Steve Simmons

Steve is correct, therefore in today's terminalogy, a Type 051 12 V battery as specified for a BMC/BL ADO15 or 16 Mini will work. It would save time though if you check that it has turrents and not blades for connectors ... unless you have blade (flat) connectors currently.

Thanks everyone. The problem I forgot to say is that the engine is very stiff after my efforts at an overhaul, I can only just turn it over by hand. I was therefore a bit concerned that unlimited amps may not be good for the starter motor.  The engine has been fired up, but running it off load in the garage will take some time to loosen things up, and it is far  from being roadworthy.

After an overhaul that has been done correctly I would be concerned if you a) cannot turn it over at all, or it turns too freely. The engine should be fairly resistive, but not impossible to turn. Do remember though to be gentle with her. Maybe a good time to purchase a copy of the reproduction of The First 500 Miles in your MG One and a Quarter Litre Series Y from regalia sales ... especially as you can now pay on line etc.!

As I started this thread thanks to all for helpful advice. The old battery must have heard the chatter as its now decided to behave properly! But advice will be useful when it eventually gives up
