MG MG Y Type - Battery Cables, heavy gauge
Years ago, I bought a set of battery cables at a jumble sales. The set consists of 4 cables and I am under the impression that I only need 3 for my YT. Please refer to the attached picture: The two cables on top are battery leads and the bottom cable runs from starter switch to starter. What puzzles me is the third cable from top (the one with the rubber booth on). Could it be that this is a TD's starter switch to starter cable? Anton Piller, Switzerland YT 4220 ![]() |

Anton From memory - one from Positive terminal to the ground/earth/chassis, - one from the Negative terminal to the starter switch, and - one from the switch to the actual starter itself. Both the ends to the starter switch should be booted to avoid shorting out the switch and false starting of the engine. The third one does not need to be that long. See which of the bottom two reaches from the switch to the starter and select one - dont know about the other! Paul |

Hi Paul and Anton, Is it possible that the shorter of the two switch to starter leads is meant for a offset battery box y where the run from switch to starter is shorter? John UMG624 |

Hello John I was thinking of this possibility too, but sinceI know no one with an offset battery box, I could not check. Anyhow, the main thing being, that I will not need to make one up for my Y/T with it's centrally mounted box. Thank you Anton |

Check the length of cable by offering them up to your car when you are ready to fit it, but be sure to add a boot on the end of the switch to prevent shorting out. Paul |

Paul The boots are read and waiting to be fitted together with the cable. Anton |
