MG MG Y Type - Boot Hinges

Y5986
Could anyone tell me if the Boot Hinges are mounted straight onto the painted metal or did they have a gasket fitted.
Thanks Roy

I have no idea on the orginal spec but I would fit a small rubber gasket behind them now, and also put a dab of silicon around the base of the stud too so stop water tracking into both the boot lid and the hinge plate base cross member to prevent rust.

Remember though
1) Dont over tighten the nuts up or you will snap them off,
2) Put a shakeproof washer on the inside too, and
3) Most importantly the bottom part of the hinge IS handed so make sure you fit them the right way around.

Both parts of the boot hinges are handed - the bottom and top parts.

An enthusiast nearby (not me) is currently producing a batch of new boot hinges in unbreakable stainless steel to the original pattern. When they are ready to market, he will post the info to the bulletin board.

Never noticed the top part being handed, but that figures!

I have a mould here and was going to cast some brass ones too for folk to go get chromed - but I mmight not bother now. Look forward to seeing the news.

There should be a cork gasket under the hinge, but rubber is just as good. Should you see ant WATSONIAN fibre-glass motorcycle sidecars rotting away anywhere, they used the same hinges on their forward-folding screen.

... and Marcos also used them as door hinges too, so I am told.

Boot Hinges were still in place on my YA in 1960 when I purchased the car, and these were mounted on moulded rubber gaskets which were in the last stages of decay [ thats what happens when you oil the hinges ]. Even by then muckite castings were nicely dimpled and crumbling away. Im afraid that the early post war cars were made of anything they could get their hands on. Chrome was notorious for peeling off soon after purchase.
