MG MG Y Type - Brake adaptor
I would like to use TD brakes on the fromt of my YA, but the male treaded end of the brake hose is too large to fit the TD adaptor/banjo bolt. Does anyone know what adaptor I should use, and where to get a pair of them? |

Scott, the easiest way to fix the problem would be to fit TD hoses as well. The chassis end fitting is the same as the Y type. |

Scott, I think this may mean more than just brake hoses: the TD has 15" wheels and a different drum size and hub design than the YA's? Different backplates, wheel stud spacings.... I may be wrong, but I think this is one of those areas where the complications just multiply: the YA and YB/TD were very different in these areas. But if it works, I'd be interested to know! Scott Tim is correct. The YB/TD is a 15" 4 lug wheel while the YA/YT is a 16" 5 lug wheel. Many years ago, as in the early 60s, I converted my YT to MGA wheels and brakes by replacing the front assemblies from the kingpin out and replacing the rear axle with one from an A. This gave me the better brakes and a lower rear end ratio for driving California highways (with the appropriate tires). It also required using MGA wheels and having the rims on the rear offset to allow for the difference in track width of the A and the YT. Made a very usable car for the time. I have since gone back to the original Y pieces. If you are interested in this conversion contact me off line as I still have the rear axle and, I believe, the wheels. Larry 49 YT |

Both YA and YB use nine inch diameter brakes, both have five stud wheels, but the YB has twin-leading-shoe brakes where as the YA uses Lockheed single-leading-shoe brakes. YA will have BSF threads, the YB a mixture of BSF and UNF. Neil. |

Neil Thanks for the correction. Not sure how I got the impression that YB wheels were 4 stud. Larry |

Larry's tale of converting his YT underlines the complexity of the swap involved here. Neil is right in that both YA and YB have nine-inch drums and five-stud hubs, but that is where the similarity ends: the separate drum and hub assembly used on the YA is completely different from the integral drum/hub on the later car - hence Larry's need for a new kingpin. Parts are not interchangeable. The same is true at the rear of the YB, where the drum and hub outer race are integrated. Scott, if your objective is better braking from your car, have you tried skimming/truing the drums and fitting new linings to the YA? My set up is now 15000 miles old and running pretty well - was complimented for efficiency by the MoT (annual inspection) tester. OK, so they're not servo discs, but they pull the car up pretty well! |
