MG MG Y Type - brake/clutch shaft guard

I believe that there should be a hemispherical metal plate affixed to the frame rail to protect the portion of the brake/clutch shaft and greaser that protruded past the outside of the frame. It was secured to the frame by three 1/4-26 BSF setscrews.

Can anyone either provide the part or information about it?

Octagonally,

Rocky - e mail me - you have my e mail still i think..I can provide a template of this - although there may well be one on this site. Its just a flat plate. Paul if there is a template on this site can you advise rocky.
D MULLEN

Hi Dave

You are referring to the plate on the inside (nearest the drive shaft) of the pedal box - that part is on the parts drawings page (see link to that from the left navigation panel on the NEWS page). Rocky is referring to the one that goes over the other end of the pedal shaft and is secured to the chassis rail.

Hi Rocky

I have made a mold for these cup plates with the intention of making them out of glass fiber but have never really tested the market for these and/or sat down and laminated some up. There are currently no after market parts available for this. Would you be interested in one if I were to make some up?

Everyone

Who else would be interested in acquiring one?

Paul
Paul Barrow

Paul,

Dave and I communicated off-line. He now understands which part I am looking for and is sending me a photo and dimensions of the one on his car. I will attempt to fabricate one by hand from a section of sheet metal.

That said, Yes, I would be interested in obtaining a fiberglass replica from you. Sign me up for one from the initial batch.

Hey Paul, put me down for one also. BTW, does anyone know of a picture of the thing, perhaps in situ? Tom
Thomas McNamara

Good luck with that Rocky! I have already looked at the plan of making them out of metal but it would be a very difficult piece to re-create. The original was a single piece pressed out of mild steel.

Let me know how you get on ... but I gave up :)!

I found one in a box of bits here and can take pics and measurements if you want-
It has a rusthole about 1/4" round in it but repairable
You can have it if you want it, but the post would outweigh it's worth
Yell out if you want some pics/measurements

Willy, can you please post some photos, (of part and part in situ) as I am unsure what the part looks like, and if my YT has it.

Willy,

Fantastic photos! Exactly what was needed.

Thank you for your kind offer to send your spare to me. How might I reimburse you for post and packaging?

Is there something I might send to you?

William Revit

Willy,

I had asked Paul Barrow to send you mine several days ago but he apparently does not have your correct address. Could you send him your current preferred address?
Mike Who? By all means let's discuss off line.

Ok- leave it with me, I'll get it sorted

So I am now going to be looking at getting a small batch of these made up (via 3-D printing process) in hard plastic. Who is interested in having one? No idea at this time what the final price is ... but it will be cheaper to buy them direct from me than any other source that may retail them (sourcing them from me)?

Please email me with expressions of interest and when I have a quote for the scan and manufacture I can get back to you. Please use the link on this post next to my name.

Thanks

Paul

Good news - prototype is now on its way to me for preproduction approval! The pictures look great and I anticipate more positive announcements soon!

Watch this space and the International MG Y Type Register news page for availability from YZ Publications!
Paul Barrow

I have just received the pre-production example from the printers and they have done a really good job. A first run of 10 has been commissioned and I am still taking expressions of interest. Email me if you are interested in going on the list!

The quality of that part looks excellent. Put me down for one please Paul.

Without it I get frequently get water splashed up the leg when driving Dunkin in the rain & puddles !.

Great Work

I now know why I didn't recognise the part. A PO has fitted a brake return spring on the outside of the chassis rail as per photo, instead of inside the brake box. Also, the 3 chassis holes have been filled in. Not sure with what as yet. Something else to rectify.

Paul, can you please include me on your list, but I will not be needing it until late June/July when I return from Europe.

Whilst checking where the pedal shaft cover fits, I noticed the tyres (Federal light truck) have date codes 2E8X, 8806, 4708 & no code - so all need replacing, although I doubt they have done 200 miles. It is either get another set of light truck tyres or go radials on widened wheels. I am considering the later, as other than local suburbia, the area where I will be driving the YT has good MG driving roads, plenty of curves and hills.

cheers
Stuart

Not to rush you Paul, especially as you are doing such a wonderful job on this but could I ask how quickly this may be available. I only ask as I will be over your side of the pond in about 3 weeks, staying for a fortnight, and if they are available by then it would save on the postage difficulties. Needless to say I would be happy to bring some back for anyone else over here who wants one.

Paul / Gentlemen
This cover--
I have a question
There are 3 bolts to hold it to the chassis
And
there is one bolthole facing the floor
I've checked 2 different original floors and neither have a screwhole to line up with the lug on the cover
Also I had an original metal cover and that hole was full of body sealer type material and no screw
Question is, -is there supposed to be a screw in this hole ?
or does the cover just seal up against the floor board

willy
William Revit

Hold on William and everyone - we are looking to provide all the answers and everything needed to replicate this for you all ... including the gasket. Just a little more patience :)!

Thanks

Paul
Paul Barrow

Ian - where were you when you were over here? It is a big country LOL?

UPDATE TO PRODUCTION
We have commissioned the production run of the covers and we are currently investigating the issue of supplying a correctly fitting gasket for these and a fixing kit so that we can supply you with a total solution. Continue to be patient please and we will advise as soon as this is all available.

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi Paul, please add my name to your list for one of these covers. We definitely need one as demonstrated a few months ago on a club run with the Grandies on-board, we all got sprayed when the YT was not quite wide enough to straddle a big puddle - they thought it was very funny!!! No rush at my end I will be away for a few months. When I read they are available I will contact you again.
Cheers

Getting close now! Covers are in stock, gaskets are in stock - just waiting now on putting together some fitting instructions to help you out.

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi,
My yb has and original cover and there is no cover just a very thick gasket between the cover and the body. the hole at the top of the cover is used by a screw at the side of the brake pedal just back from the edge of the floor board will put photo on tomorrow.
John yb0362
JC Jebb

Why wait till tomorrow when you can do it today!!also should have said no cover on shaft cover
john yb0362

JC Jebb

JC
Well, there you go
I've looked at four or five Ys here and none have the screw next to the pedal to go in that outer hole in the cover or holes in the board for it either, must be a some do ,some don't thing
William Revit

William,
Could they possible had the floors replaced? mine are still the original
John yb0362
JC Jebb

Pulled the floor out of one we know is original and yes it had a hole in the board but looked like there had never been a bolt through it from the top and the hole in the tin cover is full of black stuff,-never had a bolt in it--
It's upside down but you can see the hole up the top rh corner there
I'll have a better look first next time
Cheers

Another four volumes of The Classic Y have been added today - now up to Volume 21 - see www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/tcy.shtml.

Enjoy!

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hey Paul, any news on the availability of the "cover"? Tom McNamara
Thomas McNamara

Close Thomas.

Paul
Paul Barrow

In order to fit the cover you will need 3 1/4" BSF bolts 1/2" long and washers.

Now the question is ... should these be part of what we supply with the cover ... or do people want to get their own? Full, one stop solution ... or you then have to go somewhere else to complete the installation.

Please can people comment here so that I can gauge what to supply.

Thank you

Paul
Paul Barrow

Hi Paul,
I would have thought you supply the bolts, although there are many of us with boxes full of nuts and bolts there are also lots of new people in y ownership who do not have them.
years ago you could walk down many high streets and find a tool shop selling a large range of screws bolts nuts etc etc sadly most of them are gone and the ones that remain sell mainly metric.
John yb0362
JC Jebb

The wait is now over!! The pedal shaft, gasket and fixing kit can all now be ordered through the secure web application link at the bottom of the YZ Publications page https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/stores/yzpublications.shtml.
