MG MG Y Type - BRAKE CYLINDERS

I recently had the front brake cylinders on my TA re-sleeved with stainless steel inserts by Past Parts a company that specialises in this work. They are based in Bury St Edmunds in the UK and no doubt if you go on the web you willfind their address.

The front cylinders for a T Type fit the rears on a YA/YT from recollection (YB as well?). The point is that they took my cylinders and re-sleeved them, provided new rubbers and bleed screw. You will need to send them the inner spring and rubbers together with the cylinder of course!
The cost for the pair was £88 inc VAT and postage. They'll also be good for life. Moreover, the cost of a new cylinder is anywhere between £85 -£95 so well worthwhile to have it done. They also do master cylinders.

Thought this might be of some use.

All the best

As an alternative for above, two weeks ago I've seen the works of art from C&C. They are replacements for the YA/T brake cilinders, maybe even over-engineered with a bronze body and stainless steel pistons; almost too beautiful to fit.
I think Wiel Claassen charges EUR 100 per cilinder which is not cheap but, again, a beautiful everlasting alternative.

The YB cylinders are very different to the Y/YT ones - see Let there be Ys Chapter 6 page 43 et seq especially page 47. The YB had Twin Leading Shoe arrangements as a mod over the Single Leading Shoe of the Y/YT.

As you say Willem, the C&C stuff is very nice indeed and they have been on the Links page (Under Suppliers and Brake/Friction Systems) for quite some time now.

TC fronts were used on the Y/YT Rears - see the Alternate Parts List, and these are available from Moss Motors / NTG / Abingdon Spares / MG Octagon Car Club and many more vendors (most of whom are on the Y Website Links page. They were Lockheed BA4s.

The fronts for a YB were Lockheed BP3s - 2 per wheel and were also used on the Morris Oxford MO, and many other cars too.

Rears on a Y/YT are Lockheed BA3 and on a YB are Lockheed BX3s.

Sorry Paul, reading your post I'm confused about which is which. Is the rear Y/YT BA3 or BA4?
willem van der Veer

Sorry Willem - brain faster than fingers!

"They were Lockheed BA4s" - they refers to the FRONT CYLINDERS on a Y/YT.

"Rears on a Y/YT are Lockheed BA3".

Does that clear it up for you? I knew what I meant, I think!!

Thanks Paul, do you happen to know the inner diameter of the two?

On the last MOT the front brakes performed much less than the rear brakes (1,5 against 3,5, that sort of thing). I would think the front brakes should be the better ones, so the thought occurred to me that a PO fitted the front cilinders at the rear and vice versa. Would that be possible?
Willem van der Veer

No, unfortunately I dont (I have my limits!!). If you call Moss Motors in London and go through to their technical section they may be able to help ... at least with the TC ones. Alternately, seeing as he is a fellow countryman, I would just get some new ones from Wiel Claassen.

Willem,
I think it very doubtful that a previous owner had fitted the front cylinders to the rear and vice versa as the front and rear cylinders on the YA are of a different size. To do what you suggest would mean making alterations to the back plates in order to fit them the wrong way round.
