MG MG Y Type - Brake light switch
Can somebody please provide me with a photo of the brake light switch at the YA? I am not sure, does it sit inside the pedal box or somehow behind? regards Walter |

Walter Yes it does go inside the box. It sits on the inside of the rear wall of the box. An actuating rod connects to the pedal fulcrum to activate it. Sorry I dont have any pictures to share though. Hope that helps. Paul |

Thanks Paul,
I meanwhile found some discussions about that switch, but no image or drawing of the original position of it. The recommendation from the "hints and tips" page is, use a hydraulic switch. To me this is no option, hydraulic switches are prone to fail, as I had to learn several times. Modern cars use mechanic switches since decades. The PDF description of "The Y-type Pedal Box" by Neil Cairns shows a brake line wire, which goes from the pedal out of the box. But there are no further words about this solution. Obviously there is room for different solutions, but I am curious to see an original switch in place. |

The electrical switches are also prone to failure and are a complete pain to fit and remove hence the suggestion to fit the external hydraulic switch which at least is then accessible and easy to replace. The Lucas switches are hard to find these days too. With reference to "The Y-type Pedal Box" by Neil Cairns, this may be the case on Neil's car where he may have mounted some sort of external switch, however the original MG Y, Y/T and YB all had the switch mounted on the inside of the rear wall of the pedal box. See Let there be Ys for an accurate description of the Pedal Box arrangements. Paul |
