MG MG Y Type - Brake MC Banjo bolt
Hi all. Can anyone tell me the size of the master cylinder banjo bolt, including if its BSF? Afraid my bolt head is rounded and needs replacing. Is it the same as one for a MG TC? Also, the push rod yoke is slightly bent (a common issue) so I would also like any info on the thread size of the yoke. Is it the same as used on the Morris Minor MM? Many thanks for any help |

Hello Clive,
Back in the workshop after Grand Prix trip and MG National Meeting in Tamworth and just saw your question. My measure up is 7/16" UNF - 20 TPI for this banjo bolt. I should have a spare if you can't find one closer to home. Always use a ring spanner or brake spanner on these & always file the end of the master cylinder - they can get badly pitted (especially if you are using Silicone fluid) - see images attached. The images show the difference in the reservoir plug hole before & after filing, but the banjo hole was pitted the same and a copper washer cannot cure the pitting - silicone fluid will find it's way more so than Dot3/4. Cheers Tony The Classic Workshop PS - I will go and measure up the clevis fork thread now and get back to you. ![]() ![]() |

Hi Tony,
Many thanks for your reply. As this was my first post and I had received no responses, I was beginning to think that I had not followed some protocol, or something. The banjo bolt had been rounded by a PO, and exacerbated by me getting it off. Agree with a ring spanner approach but the brake union prevented one fitting. I filed down the head so an 11/16 AF now fits nicely. However, I always prefer to retain originality and hence my query re a TC banjo bolt. No retailers seem to indicate having a banjo bolt for a YA. As for the yoke, again no one seems to identify selling these for a YA. Closest I found was one being sold for a Morris Minor (no details on specs). As these are $60+ I was loathe to buy on chance and maybe end up with another automotive paper weight. It was a Morris Minor forum that noted that these often bend at the thread (and if you reuse in the bent form, the bend, ie. bottom of the U, should go DOWNWARDS). Many thanks for taking the time to reply and provide the images and specs. If I ascertain the commonality with a TC and Morris M I will post. PS. Did you happen to ascertain if you have the small window blind pivot wheel? Hope you enjoyed Melbourne and the National Concours. Thanks Clive |

Hi Clive The Nat Meet was in Tamworth and there were 5 Tourers, a Sedan and a cut down Saloon (4 door Tourer). See photo of tourers and sedan. A great dry and warm weekend. I note that NTG has the MC / Wheel cyl Banjo bolt listed. cheers Stuart ![]() |

Probably a Whitworth head on the bolt too which is why it has been rounded off! Paul |

Thanks Stuart Cut down sedan would have been interesting. Did you get a close up photo of it? The NTG site threw me as the description on the site noted the bolt for a TC wheel cylinder and rear of MC, but only a YA/YT wheel cylinder. Thanks for confirming it also fits the YA/YT MC. Now to solve the yoke. cheers Clive |

Clive - I saw what is probably the same cut-down saloon at the 2023 National Meet in Adelaide - it's a lovely piece of work. I forget the owner's name, but I hope they won't mind if I attach a piccy. John.
